The present work focuses on ethically dubious practices in goal setting. Based on two empirical studies, we have tested how the degree of ethics attributed to the leader may be related to the occurrence of some determining practices and considered as unethical in the process of goal setting. The results obtained corroborate the hypothesis formulated, suggesting that the more the leadership is perceived as ethical, the less will be the occurrence of unethical goal setting practices. In this sense, those who perceive their leader as ethical will also associate the use of ethical practices in the establishment of the work objectives. Among the analyzed practices, it is clear that the low ethical actions underlying the participation and communication of the objectives are the ones who present a greater association with the ethics of leadership, thus, they are less occurring the more ethical the leader is perceived. Also, unethical practices related to the consequence of the goals present a significant link to ethical leadership, as the ethical leader is concerned with the results of his actions in goal setting, not using low ethical practices to do so. The association of objectives with rewards is comparatively with the rest, the factor with less preponderance, being that the occurrence of these practices little interferes with the ethics of the leader. |
