A vila de Alenquer pelas vidas do seu rio. Escola Conde Ferreira

Abstract

A vila de Alenquer, ao longo dos séculos viu no seu rio uma fonte de riqueza, que durante muito tempo foi o grande motor da sua economia, demonstrando ser o bem mais precioso que esta terra possuía. Todavia, nos dias que correm, o rio não tem a mesma importância no quotidiano da vila. A relação entre o rio e a vila sempre foi forte ao longo dos tempos, no entanto, esta situação nem sempre trouxe mais-valias para este local. Embora esta linha de água tenha sido uma fonte de alimento para as populações locais, e mais tarde no século XIX, força motriz de várias fábricas que gravaram o nome de Alenquer no panorama industrial português, foi também um sério problema para a vila, pois em épocas de cheias, as suas águas inundavam toda a zona baixa alenquerense, o que causava muitos estragos à população local. Numa tentativa de salvaguardar a população das inundações, nos meados do século XX, foi executado o plano de rectificação do leito do rio e arranjo das suas margens. Após as obras efectuadas ao longo do curso do rio de Alenquer dentro da vila, este perdeu o seu curso sinuoso, passando a ser um canal artificial em forma de “S”, de caudal pouco volumoso, perdendo a sua beleza natural. A partir deste momento, a importância desta linha de água no quotidiano deste local foi diminuindo até aos nossos dias. Assim, este estudo analisa as razões que justificam a actual situação do Rio de Alenquer e quais foram os pontos altos e baixos dessa relação ao longo dos tempos, de modo a construir uma crítica sobre a actual relação entre o Rio de Alenquer e a Vila.

Throughout the centuries, Alenquer's villagers have looked at its river and seen a vast amount of wealth that has been the engine behind its growing economy and was once its most valuable asset. But, nowadays, its importance and value to the village’s everyday life is not the same. The relationship between the villagers and the river has always been impregnable, even though it wasn't always a benefit to the village. On one hand, this water vessel once served as a food source for the local population and it came to be known - in the latter "XIX" century - as the thriving force behind the companies that carved Alequer's name in the Portuguese industrial scene. On the other hand, it was also a crippling and serious problem due to the devastating power of its waters in the flooding season, during which it flooded the lower area of Alenquer, causing tremendous damage to the local population and infrastructures. In an attempt to protect them from the floods, in the middle of the XX century, was developed a plan to rectify the river's bed and rearrange its margins. Once these changes were implemented in the river's course, and, the constructions were finished alongside the riverbank, the river lost its sinuous course, thus becoming an "S" shaped artificial canal with little volume, losing it’s natural beauty. From that moment on, the importance of this water vassel to the everyday life of the locals has been decreasing. In sight of this, this study analyzes the motives that justify the current situation of the Alenquer's River and its relation to the village, shedding light to its ups and downs throughout time, so to build a critique as to how this relationship is currently shaped.
