Arquitetura termal - os banhos quentes na ilha de São Miguel, Açores.

Abstract

O termalismo tem vindo a assumir um papel importante no desenvolvimento do país, principalmente dos Açores, onde a arquitectura termal encontra-se directamente relacionada com os recursos hidrotermais, equipamentos e acessórios terapêuticos, as práticas e usos tradicionais e, especialmente, com a paisagem. Portante, é importante compreender este fenómeno. A presente investigação tem como principal objectivo a realização de um mapeamento histórico e registo arquitectónico, actualmente inexistente, dos edifícios termais da ilha de São Miguel, no arquipélago dos Açores. A elaboração destes registos surge pela importância de preservar a memória dos edifícios e estâncias termais que, em alguns casos, se encontram demolidos, existentes ou ao abandono. A pesquisa é baseada num trabalho exaustivo de análise de documentos de arquivo e, sobretudo, trabalho de campo. Verificou-se que o passado histórico da ilha certifica a utilidade e a eficácia dos banhos de água mineral, quer pelo número de edifícios termais construídos, quer pela riqueza hidrogeológica e paisagística local. Porém as exigências do sector termal, a nível de qualidade, conforto e segurança, levaram à desactualização e à desacreditação das infra-estruturas, assumindo-se a Natureza como elemento fulcral no conceito da saúde e bem-estar, não só pela abundância de nascentes minero termais, mas sobretudo, pela especificidade dos locais onde estas emergem. Actualmente, vive-se um reviver do termalismo e da arquitectura termal, pelo sector turístico, através da requalificação e revitalização das estâncias termais.

The Hydrotherapy has assumed an important role in the development of the country, especially the Azores, where the thermal architecture is directly related to the hydrothermal resources, therapeutic equipment and accessories, practices and traditional uses and especially with the landscape. Therefore, it is important to understand this phenomenon. This research aims to carry out a historical and architectural mapping record, currently non-existent, of the thermal buildings on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores. The preparation of these maps arises the importance of preserving the memory of the buildings and spas, in some cases, they are demolished, existing or abandoned. The research is based on a thorough job of records analysis and, above all, field work. It was found that the historical past of the island certifies the utility and effectiveness of the mineral baths, either by the number of thermal buildings constructed either by wealth hydrogeological and local landscape. But the requirements of the thermal sector, the level of quality, comfort and safety, led to the downgrade and the discrediting of infrastructure, assuming the nature as a key element in the concept of health and well-being, not only by the abundance of thermal springs, but above all, the specificity of the places where those emerge. Currently, we live in a revival of hydrotherapy and thermal architecture, by the tourism sector, through the rehabilitation and revitalization of spas.
