As pescas e os pescadores em duas publicações da imprensa escrita Portuguesa – Correio da Manhã e Público

Abstract

Os objectivos do presente estudo foram: descrever e caracterizar a cobertura dada ao sector das pescas e aos seus intervenientes por dois periódicos nacionais, o Correio da Manhã(CM) e o Público(P), durante a década de 1996-2005; comparar as coberturas dos dois periódicos com dados estatísticos oficiais sobre o sector. O corpus análise foi constituído por 457 edições de cada periódico, sendo que em cada dia foram consultados ambas as publicações. Em cada jornal foram seleccionadas todas as peças identificadas pelo investigador como directamente relacionados com a fileira das pescas. Foi criada uma base de dados em Excel onde para cada artigo seleccionado foram registadas, sempre que isso foi possível ou aplicável, variáveis referentes à forma e ao conteúdo das peças. Estas variáveis foram tratadas essencialmente em termos de número e importância relativa. Da análise dos resultados concluiu-se que as coberturas prestadas pelos dois periódicos foram relativamente semelhantes, tendo no entanto apresentado algumas particularidades. No geral, pode dizer-se que foram encontradas nos dois periódicos quatro tendências gerais de abordagem do sector das pescas: Drama Humano; Arena Política, Diplomática, Social e Económica; Conservação e Investigação Científica; e Dimensão Lúdica e Cultural. No P assistiuse a uma inclinação ligeira para abordar a 2ª e a 3ª, enquanto no CM as 1ª e 4ª abordagens foram mais patentes. O padrão declinante do número de peças jornalísticas encontradas para ambos os periódicos durante a década de 1996-2005 parece enquadrar-se na tendência geral de crise e de regressão que as estatísticas oficiais sobre o sector demonstram.

The objectives for the present study were: describe and characterize the coverage given to the fisheries sector and its intervenients by two Portuguese newspapers, a tabloid and a reference journal, during the 1996-2005 decade; compare the media coverage of the two journals with official statistical data for the sector. The body of analysis was constituted by 457 editions of each newspaper, and both editions were consulted in the same day. In each journal every text directly identified with the sector by the investigator were selected. An Excel database was created where numerous variables were ascribed to each selected article, whenever possible or applicable. These variables were explored essentially in terms of number and relative importance. From the resulting analysis it was concluded that the coverage given by these two publications was relatively similar, albeit there were some particularities. Generally speaking, it can be said that there were in both newspapers four main general tendencies of framing the fisheries sector: Human Drama; Political, Diplomatic, Social and Economical Arena; Conservation and Scientific Research; and Leisure and Cultural Dimension. In the reference newspaper the second and third frames were more common, whilst in the popular newspaper the first and fourth angles were more present. The declining pattern of the news about the fisheries sector throughout the 1996-2005 decade seems to relate to the overall crises and regression that the official statistics of the sector show.
