O coming out dos jovens gays aos pais e mães

Abstract

A presente dissertação propõe trazer à luz da análise sociológica a problemática da revelação da homossexualidade aos pais e mães, do ponto de vista dos próprios filhos, abordando as temáticas da masculinidade, heteronormatividade e homofobia. Este estudo explora as consequências da revelação da homossexualidade aos pais e mães, enquadradas no contexto familiar e individual do jovem gay, a partir de uma metodologia qualitativa. Foram entrevistados 16 jovens gays portugueses, com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e os 30 anos, que já tinham revelado a sua orientação sexual ao seu pai e /ou mãe. Adicionalmente, foram auscultados representantes de três associações LGBT (ILGA- Portugal, rede ex aequo e AMPLOS) a fim de identificar as suas experiências no que concerne ao coming out dos jovens gays aos pais e mães. Os dados revelam que, pese embora a diversidade de reações dos pais e mães, o coming out aos pais e mães não resulta na rutura de relacionamento entre estes e os filhos. Os dados também demonstram que a qualidade da relação que os jovens gays têm com os seus pais e mães tende a melhorar após a ocorrência da revelação. Essas mudanças fazem-se pautar por uma maior proximidade e transparência. No entanto, também se constatou que o coming out do jovem gay tende a quebrar as expectativas parentais relacionadas com uma vivencia heteronormativa, em particular as que estão intimamente associadas à descendência.

This dissertation aims to bring the revelation of homosexuality to the parents to the light of sociological analysis, from the sons’ points of view. While developing at the same time an approach towards masculinity, heteronormativity and homophobia. This study primes itself in the exploration of the consequences of the coming out of the closet in the family context of the young gay man. We interviewed 16 Portuguese gay young men, with ages between 18 and 30 years-old, that have already revealed their sexual orientation to their father and / or mother. Additionally, representatives of three LGBT associations (ILGA – Portugal, rede ex aequo and AMPLOS) were osculated in order to identify their experience about the coming out to patents. The data revealed that regardless of the reaction of the parents, the coming out to parents doesn’t result in the rupture of the relationship between parents and sons. The data also showed that the quality of the relationship that the young gay men have with their parents tends to improve after the occurrence of the coming out. Those changes are characterized by a greater proximity and transparency. However, we also found that the coming out tends to break the parent’s expectations in relation to a heteronormative experience, in particular those deeply associated to the offspring.
