O impacto da presença britânica na Ilha Terceira: (1943-1946)

Abstract

Este projecto procurou analisar o impacto da presença britânica na Ilha Terceira durante a II Guerra Mundial. Os britânicos chegaram à Terceira, em Outubro de 1943 e saíram 3 anos depois. O desembarque britânico na Terceira permitiu o rápido alargamento da pista das Lajes e a diminuição do desemprego, que tinha aumentado drasticamente, porque muitos agricultores foram expropriados dos seus terrenos. A situação de Guerra, o aumento da população da Ilha e a falta de terrenos para a Agricultura, conduziram a Ilha a uma crescente falta de matérias-primas e a um forte racionamento. Esta situação provocou um agravamento do custo de vida da Ilha, pois havia menos produtos e mais dinheiro. Contudo, este aumento era demasiado elevado para as posses das populações locais, que viveram numa situação difícil. A interacção luso-britânica iniciou-se com a contratação de locais para as obras do Aeródromo e foi-se intensificando lentamente. Os britânicos passaram a participar em algumas festividades locais, aproximando-se das terceirenses. Esta situação não foi bem vista pelos homens locais, o que obrigou os Comandos Militares a resolver a situação. Neste período, junto ao acampamento britânico, apareceram muitas casas de prostituição e de tabernas, O impacto da presença britânica constata-se no aumento da actividade desportiva entre os dois povos, no surgimento de salas de cinema e de música, nas obras da Base, no surgimento de palavras como “Bidon”, mas principalmente na construção da Aldeia Novas das Lajes, retrato da camaradagem luso-britânica.

The project sought to examine the impact of the British presence in Terceira Island during World War II. The British arrived in Terceira, in October of 1943 and left the Island 3 years later. The British landing in Terceira Island allowed the fast expansion of the runway and the decrease of the unemployment, which had risen sharply because many farmers had been expropriated of their lands. The state of war, the increasing of the population and the lack of land for agriculture led the island to a growing shortage of raw materials and a strong rationing. This caused an increase in the cost of living in the island, because there were fewer products and more money. However, these prices were too high for the purchasing power of the local people, who lived in a difficult situation. The Portuguese-British interaction began with the hiring of local workers for the Airfield and slowly intensified. The British began to take part in some local festivities, having become closer to the women in the island. This was not well regarded by local men, who forced the Military Commands to resolve the situation. During this period, near the British camp, prostitution houses and taverns emerge in greater numbers. The impact of the British presence can be seen by the intensified activity in sports between the two peoples, the emergence of cinemas and bars with music, the construction of the airfield, the appearance of words like "Bidon", but mainly in the construction of the Aldeia Nova das Lajes, the portrait of the Portuguese-British friendship.
