Abstract: | As the world’s economies are becoming increasingly integrated into global trading relations, the
need to understand cultural influences on leadership has never been greater. The study examines
the usage of five leadership practices of transformational leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 1987) by
MBA and postgraduate students from two European countries: Slovenia and Portugal. A
standardized survey instrument – the Leadership Practices Inventory (Kouzes & Posner, 1993) is
used to collect responses on the self-reported usage of five transformational leadership practices
from two national samples. The major conclusion is that there are more similarities than
differences in the actual usage of the five leadership pracitces. Cultural background had a little
effect on leadership behaviors in both countries. The study also reveales there is no impact of
gender, age, work experience and the business function on the usage of the five leadership
practices. Although the cultural differences are small, they are still large enough to be an
important factor in the success or failure of particular cross-cultural leadership attempts. |
