Jovens em acolhimento residencial: o efeito da auto-representação no sucesso escolar

Abstract

Os jovens em acolhimento residencial são uma das populações de maior risco de insucesso escolar (Jackson & Cameron, 2012). Diversos fatores exercem influência no sucesso escolar, sendo a auto-representação (AR) um deles. Neste sentido, este estudo teve como objetivos [1] descrever as auto-representações e o sucesso escolar dos jovens em acolhimento residencial, [2] analisar a relação entre as duas variáveis e [3] investigar o papel moderador de variáveis individuais (sexo e idade), institucionais (tempo de acolhimento) e escolares (suspensão/expulsão) na relação entre a auto-representação e o sucesso escolar dos jovens em acolhimento residencial. A amostra foi constituída por jovens em acolhimento residencial (N=150), com idades compreendidas entre os 11 e os 19 anos (54% do sexo masculino e 46% do sexo feminino). A auto-representação foi avaliada através do Self-Representation Questionnaire for Youth in Residential Care (Patrício & Calheiros, in press), e o sucesso escolar pelas notas a português, matemática, média geral de notas e número de reprovações. Verificou-se que a auto-representação dos jovens em acolhimento residencial teve influência no seu sucesso escolar, sendo que, AR da competência e a AR global positiva teve um efeito direto e as dimensões comportamental, emocional, relacional, desintegrado da AR e AR global negativa exerceram um efeito nas condições das variáveis moderadoras. Relativamente aos efeitos de interação, verificou-se que o sexo, a idade, o tempo de acolhimento e a suspensão/expulsão moderam a relação entre a auto-representação e o sucesso escolar.

Young people in residential care are one of the populations most at risk of school failure (Jackson & Cameron, 2012). Several factors have an influence on academic success, self-representation (SR) is one of them. Thus, the aim of this study was [1] to describe the self-representations and academic achievement in adolescents in residential care, [2] to analyse the relation between these two variables and [3] investigate the moderating role of individual variables (gender and age), institutional (length of stay) and school variables (suspension/expulsion) on the relationship between self-representation and the academic achievement of young people in residential care. The sample consisted of young people in residential care (N= 150), aged 11 to 19 years old (54% male and 46% female). The self-representation was assessed using the Self-Representation Questionnaire for Youth in Residential Care (Patrício & Calheiros, in press) and academic achievement with grades of portuguese, mathematics, overall average grade and number of failures. It was found that self-representation of young people in residential care had influence on their academic success, SR competence and global positive SR had a direct effect and behavioural, emotional, relational, misfit dimensions of SR and global negative SR had an effect on the conditions of moderating variables. For the effects of interaction, it was found that sex, age, length of stay and suspension/expulsion moderate the relationship between self-representation and academic success.
