This project applies a model, developed by the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG), known as Voluntary ESRS for non-listed Micro-, Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises - Exposure Draft (VSME ED), on a Portuguese natural stone company. Sustainability reporting has become a paradigm in corporate transparency, however, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face difficulties in meeting the requirements of complex frameworks and answer questionnaires of sustainability information. Through a qualitative methodology, this project test and evaluates the applicability, proportionality and usability, and also identify some benefits and challenges of the VSME ED Basic Module, a standard that propose to solve this problem. The process of preparing the sustainability report revealed to be essential for understanding the implications of the standard and for validating its potential as an effective reporting tool for the company and others non-listed SMEs. However, there are some limitations of the study, more specifically the limited duration of the study, the empirical restrictions of only analyzing one company and the absence of external assurance. Overall, the conclusions of the study demonstrate that VSME ED provides a simplified tool that helps SMEs to disclose sustainability information without disproportionate burdens and will bring diverse benefits for companies.
