| dc.description.abstract | The police profession constitutes a central element in the social structure and functioning of the Portuguese State, shaping professional identities, forms of institutional belonging, and collective perceptions of security and public order. Over the past decades, the relationship between police forces, the State, and society has undergone significant transformation, reflecting political, media, and cultural changes. This dissertation examines the meaning of “being a police officer” in contemporary Portugal, exploring the representations, experiences, and values attributed to the profession by police officers themselves, based on semi-structured interviews with members of the PSP, GNR, and PJ. The findings reveal the existence of a crosscutting police culture characterized by camaraderie, hierarchy, and a sense of mission, but also marked by feelings of symbolic vulnerability and a need for both material and institutional recognition. It concludes that “being a police officer” constitutes an identity in constant negotiation between vocation, recognition, and belonging, encompassing moral, affective, and political dimensions. | |
