| dc.description.abstract | In recent years, social networks have been replacing traditional media in terms of news dissemination. This dissertation analyses the impact of news disseminated by the traditional press and by companies themselves on their social networks on the reactions of the capital market in Portugal. This study aims to understand how the communication channel influences the variations in share prices and trading volume, as well as to identify which news items have the greatest effect on investors and the market. The research adopts a mixed methodological approach, applied to four companies listed on Euronext Lisbon (BCP, CTT, Mota-Engil and NOS) between August 2024 and January 2025. News items were collected from each company and subsequently classified by channel, content and sentiment conveyed. This data was cross-referenced with the price and volume extracted from Euronext, allowing for a more comprehensive analysis of the results. The results indicate that news sharing has a significant impact on market activity, with distinct patterns between dissemination channels. Price reactions are more modest, while volume variations are more pronounced and longer lasting, especially after news is disseminated on social media. News with strategic and financial content has a greater impact, while ESG news generates more subtle effects. These conclusions reinforce the role of the media in shaping investor expectations and offer relevant contributions to corporate communication in markets such as Portugal. | |
