Imperium in imperio: The Mozambique Company and the making of the indígenato and chibalo

Abstract

This thesis examines the particularities of the indígenato and chibalo under the Mozambique Company’s rule. The chronological bounds are 1884-1942. 1884 marked the start of the Berlin Conference and the beginning of “effective occupation.” 1942 was when the Mozambique Company’s charter came to an end. This thesis first examines the relationship between the Portuguese project of empire and the Mozambique Company. It will examine how changes in the Portuguese “project of empire,” and the political and economic environment made it appear in Portuguese interests to grant the Mozambique Company its charter in February 1891. It also surveys shifts at the macro-level within the Portuguese empire project to situate this case study within the larger historical narrative. This thesis then analyzes the making of the indígenato under the company administration, tracing a genealogy of this concept through legal texts. It also examines how colonial categories were maintained by identification and policing. This thesis then explores the different forms of unfree labor chibalo encompassed, the changing labor codes, and vicious tax system under Company rule. Finally, this thesis explores the impact of the indígenato and chibalo on the lives of Mozambicans living within the company territory. This thesis concludes by reflecting on what this case study tells us about the historiography on the Mozambique Company and the intersections between this Company, empire, labor, and citizenship.

Esta dissertação pretende focar-se nas particularidades do indígenato e do chibalo no território da Companhia de Moçambique. O limite cronólogico estabelece-se entre o ano de 1891 até 1942. 1891 foi o ano do início da Conferência de Berlim que resultou no princípio da “ocupação efectiva.” 1942 foi o ano do fim da concessão da Companhia de Moçambique. Em primeiro lugar, esta dissertação pretende estudar as conexões entre o projecto imperial português e a Companhia de Moçambique, concluindo que o Governo Português concedeu à Companhia de Moçambique o seu poder majestático em 1891, devido à situação económica e política. Esta dissertação também examina as mudanças no projecto imperial português ao nível macro para enquadrar este estudo de caso numa narrativa histórica mais abrangente. Em segundo lugar, a dissertação procura tratar o assunto do indígenato no território da Companhia de Moçambique traçando uma genealogia do conceito usando textos legais. Ela também procura analisar como as categorias coloniais foram mantidos por mecanismos de identificação e de policiamento. Em terceiro lugar, esta dissertação analisa as formas diferentes de chibalo, os regulamentos de trabalho e do regime tributário no território da Companhia de Moçambique. Por último, esta dissertação pretende compreender o impacto do indígenato e do chibalo ao nível da vida dos moçambicanos que viviam no território da Companhia. As conclusões pretendem examinar o papel deste estudo de caso na historiografia da Companhia de Moçambique, e sobre as interligações entre a Companhia, o império, o trabalho e a cidadania.
