The painter Maria Keil refers that, the first time she talked to her future husband, the architect Francisco Keil do Amaral, it was nearby ESBAL (the School of Fine Arts of Lisbon), that both of them attended. “Get outside, there’s nothing to learn over there” he told her. By “over ther”, he meant the School. A School strongly associated with the portuguese dictatorship and with outdated ideas, where there was a strong and willing resistence towards new values on architecture. This is, generally, the idea that became tradicional regarding the teaching of architecture in Lisbon, in the second half of the Twentieth Century. In Oporto, the School is associated with an intense renewal, with a capacity to make ‘modern’, particularly from the moment when Carlos Ramos and, later, Fernando Távora, start to gather on their studios the best students of the School. In a time-frame when the articulation between School and stuidos was so strong, how was developed the teaching of architecture, and how could studio work complete the work on the School? When we regard architectonic culture of this time in both Oporto and Lisbon, usually we find strong – and existing – a School in Oporto, on the whereabouts of a fertile cultural environment and a strong architectural production in the city. Professors and professionals get mixed up. In Lisbon, the situation in different beyond any doubt. But from the moment we start regarding some of the buildings projected in Lisbon by architects who graduated right there, we may realize that perhaps the absence of an innovating School, capable of a participation in the renovations in european architecture, might not have meant the total absence of a school: not in an academic sense, but in the sense that it translates a sequence of specific practices, articulations and dialogues. That school evolves around studios. The one on the 25th Rua da Alegria – that wasn’t always there – seems to be the one where we can account a great number of architects and projects and the one that, more clearly, we can find a true school in Lisbon, even if it always worked separated from the School. This essay tries to understand not only the relationship between official teaching and the capability of a studio to make a school, with a more or less defined structural identity. But it also aims to understand why the 25th Rua da Alegria seems to be the best example. Further, this work aims to reject the one-sideness that most – but not all – of critic and History, to understand, within the space limits of this kind of work, what might be the Lisbon contribution and the 25th Rua da Alegria contribution to portuguese architecture of the second half of the past century.
