“If you look beneath the economic cycle will see trends, currents, in customer behavior. If you
can position your business to capture those fast currents, it will give you growth. (...)
Ultimately, for any business, sticking close to your customer and tracking their needs is where
growth will come from”
Sir TerryLeahy ex-CEO TESCO (CLab 2013) Private labels are no longer just a basic product, with a clean label which the only perceived benefit is low price. Today, private labels are really brands, worked by retailers the same way as multinationals, with the on top benefit of communicating only one brand – Continente, Pingo Doce, Intermarché – working as halo effect for the company. Manufacturer brands have as the main challenge the demand of grabbing consumer‟s attention, having to justify which differentiation they can offer to consumer. And to deeply understand how this thematic has been evolving it‟s important to do a framework to the economic situation in Europe and particularly in Portugal – a negative scenario which helps explaining the proliferation of economic brands – followed by a description of the market, FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), and the consumer that faces all this transformation of buying habits, always aware of all types of promotions and having price as the main purchasing driver. There are lots of references for low cost propositions. They are own labels, private labels, distribution brands, etc. Even with all this names the truth is that they are undoubtedly the main competitor of manufacturer brands, always known for their leadership in the market. And here is where the main challenge lies for those: how to face the growth of private label in a long term perspective, without implying an excessive effort in price promotions. And the answer given here is that the offer of a low cost manufacturer brand, offered exclusively to a major customer can be a successful alternative. It‟s also a challenge for a deeper research in this thematic since it‟s a relatively new area of investigation. This is the main topic that underlies this teaching case, in which way can manufacturer brands establish a partnership with main retailers chains, offering exclusive brands that substitute‟s its private label, with the expectation of a win win partnership. The manufacturer can offer an exclusive low price brand and have a wider range of offer in price ladder, with the possibility of less promotional sacrifice in their existing brands. The retailer puts the onus of brand management in manufacturer‟s hands. Can this be a strategy for the future? Why not? “If you look beneath the economic cycle will see trends, currents, in customer behavior. If you can position your business to capture those fast currents, it will give you growth. (...) Ultimately, for any business, sticking close to your customer and tracking their needs is where growth will come from” Sir TerryLeahy ex-CEO TESCO (CLab 2013) |
