Bug-Jargal de Victor Hugo: as representações culturais e somáticas dos escravos de São Domingos como legitimação da negrofilia e do abolicionismo

Abstract

Victor Hugo (Besançon, 1802 – Paris, 1885) concebeu em 1818 o romance Bug-Jargal, obra da literatura negrófila francesa cuja acção se desenrola durante a insurreição dos escravos de São Domingos, em 1791, e que narra a história do escravo Pierrot, que na realidade é o príncipe kakongo (cabindense) Bug-Jargal. Pretendemos analisar como é que neste romance, posterior em 30 anos à criação da Societé des Amis des Noirs, em 1788, o jovem Victor Hugo desconstrói as fantasias abolicionistas acerca dos africanos, num conjunto de representações culturais dos escravos de São Domingos, nomeadamente os negros congos, os negros crioulos e os mulatos, estes últimos hierarquizados pelas 9 classificações somáticas propostas por Moreau de Saint-Méry (1750-1819) para a mestiçagem. Ao mesmo tempo prepara o que virá a ser a cultura colonial dos séculos XIX, XX e XXI.

Victor Hugo (Besançon, 1802 - Paris, 1885) conceived in 1818 the novel Bug-Jargal, about the slaves of Saint-Domingue in 1789 and telling the history of the slave Pierrot, which is, in the reality, the kakongo’s prince Bug-Jargal. We intend to analyze how the young Victor Hugo approach in this novel, written 30 years after the creation of the Societé des Amis des Noirs, in 1788, the abolitionist fancies concerning the Africans, in a set of cultural representations of the slaves of Saint-Domingue, nominated the congos blacks, the creole blacks and the mulatos, these last ones hierarchized for the 9 somatic classifications proposals by Moreau de Saint-Méry (1750-1819) for the mestization. At the same time it prepares what it will come to be the colonial culture of centuries XIX, XX and XXI.
