O movimento vegan em Portugal: significados e justificações

Abstract

Esta investigação consiste na realização de um estudo exploratório sobre algumas dimensões do fenómeno social – o veganismo. O que se pretende com este estudo é analisar o veganismo em Portugal enquanto movimento social. Neste sentido, por um lado, descrevemos os principais momentos históricos do movimento vegan em Portugal, nomeadamente, a sua origem e principais influências ideológico filosóficas, institucionalização e a sua contribuição para a reconfiguração das relações entre animais humanos e não humanos através da mobilização política e social. Por outro lado, analisamos um grupo específico de praticantes vegan, de forma a tentar compreender os significados que atribuem ao veganismo e as justificações sobre estas práticas. Tendo em conta estes objectivos, o conceito operatório desta pesquisa, o qual permitirá analisar e interpretar os resultados do material empírico exploratório, é o de novos movimentos sociais. Quanto aos pressupostos metodológicos, considerou-se que a técnica mais apropriada seria a metodologia qualitativa, em particular, as entrevistas. Optou-se pela realização de entrevistas semi diretivas, que foram analisadas utilizando a técnica da análise de conteúdo. Os participantes nestas entrevistas são indivíduos que seguem a prática vegan e que são ou foram membros da associação “Animal”, a principal organização portuguesa no que respeita à defesa dos direitos dos animais e a qual foi objeto de estudo nesta investigação. A partir da análise dos resultados, concluímos que o veganismo pode ser caracterizado como um movimento social, em particular, como um Novo Movimento Social (NMS), dado que as suas principais características se enquadram nos pressupostos que definem este conceito. Por outro lado, constatámos que o principal significado que os entrevistados atribuem ao veganismo prende-se, sobretudo, com o propósito das suas práticas causarem o menor sofrimento possível aos animais.

This investigation focuses on an exploratory study concerning some dimensions of the social phenomenon – veganism. The aim of this study is to analyse veganism in Portugal as a social movement. In this way, on the one hand, we describe the main historical moments of the vegan movement in Portugal, in particular, its origins and main ideological and philosophical influences, institutionalisation and its contribution to the reconfiguration of the relations between human and non-human animals, through political and social mobilization. On the other hand, we analyse a specific group of vegans, in order to try to understand meanings and justifications of vegan practices. Regarding these goals, the operatory concept of this research, which enables to analyse and grasp the empirical exploratory data, is the concept of social movement. As for the methodological procedures, we considered that the most appropriate technique would be the qualitative methodology, in particular, the interviews. We have chosen semi directive interviews, which were analysed using the content analysis technique. The participants of these interviews are vegan individuals and are or were members of the “Animal” association, the main Portuguese organization dedicated to animal rights, which was object of study in this research. From the result analysis, we conclude that veganism can be characterized as a social movement, in particular, as a New Social Movement (NSM), as their main characteristics are framed in the assumptions that define this concept. On the other hand, we noted that the main meaning that the respondents attribute to veganism is associated, mainly, to cause the less suffering possible to animals by their practices.
