Do ganha-pão à valorização pessoal. A centralidade do trabalho na vida dos indivíduos

Abstract

O trabalho é um aspecto central das sociedades contemporâneas. Homens e mulheres atribuem uma importância fundamental a esta dimensão das suas vidas. Neste artigo ir-se-á reflectir sobre os significados subjectivos e objectivos que o trabalho adquire para os indivíduos, no que diz respeito a aspectos como o seu percurso profissional, o sentimento destes perante o seu trabalho actual, a influência que o trabalho tem na família, as horas de trabalho efectivamente realizadas, ou as horas de trabalho desejadas. Para tal usar-se-ão os dados obtidos através da análise de entrevistas aprofundadas realizadas em Lisboa, no Porto e em Leiria, a casais com diferentes durações de casamento e diferentes pertenças sociais. Concluímos que homens e mulheres valorizam o seu trabalho profissional, adquirindo este importância a vários níveis, desde um nível mais instrumental a um nível mais expressivo. No geral, o trabalho tende a influenciar a vida dos nossos entrevistados tanto pela positiva, sobretudo ao nível da importância que adquire para a sua identidade pessoal, como pela negativa, devido ao sentimento de que os horários e/ou as horas de trabalho retiram tempo para a família, e ao stresse e preocupações que se levam para casa.

Work is a central aspect of contemporary societies. Men and women attribute fundamental importance to this dimension of their lives. This article will reflect on the subjective and objective meanings that work acquires for individuals, with regard to aspects such as their careers, their feelings towards their present job, the influence that work has on the family, the working hours actually put in or the working hours desired. For this purpose, we shall use the data obtained from an analysis of in-depth interviews carried out in Lisbon, Oporto and Leiria with couples that have been married for different lengths of time and belong to different social environments. We conclude that men and women attach value to the work involved in their occupation, developing its importance at different levels, from a more instrumental level to a more emotional level. Generally speaking, work tends to have not only a positive influence on our interviewees' lives, but also a negative one, arising from the feeling that work schedules and/or working hours rob them of time for the family, and from the stress and worry that they take home.
