Pátios e vilas da Zona Ribeirinha Oriental: materialidade, memória e recuperação urbana

Abstract

Este trabalho estuda os Pátios e Vilas da Zona Ribeirinha Oriental de Lisboa, testemunhos de uma forma de habitar a cidade característica da industrialização vivida em Portugal a partir de meados do século XIX. Após uma reavaliação das tipologias até agora propostas para os Pátios e Vilas lisboetas, analisaram-se as transformações da orla ribeirinha das actuais freguesias de Marvila e Beato, caracterizando a sua história e evolução urbana nos últimos dois séculos, desde que se tornaram num dos principais pólos industriais de Lisboa, abordando as suas várias fases de crescimento até à desindustrialização de finais do século XX e chegando aos dias de hoje. Efectuando estudos de caso dos seus Pátios e Vilas, procurou-se conhecer a história destes núcleos de habitação popular, caracterizados actualmente por uma degradação generalizada, recuperando, também pelo recurso à História Oral, um pouco dos modos de viver da sua antiga população. Reconhecendo o perigo de desaparecimento destes Pátios e Vilas da Zona Ribeirinha Oriental e dos referentes de memória que fizeram o dia-a-dia dos seus habitantes, analisaram-se alguns dos projectos de reabilitação urbana já ensaiados ou projectados para esta região ou para os seus velhos núcleos de habitação operária e/ou popular, e de que modo entidades como a DRUPV e a SRU Oriental os viram ou pretenderam recuperar. Do cruzamento das variáveis abordadas espera trazer-se alguma contribuição para a compreensão destes núcleos habitacionais, avançando igualmente algumas propostas ou pistas para a sua necessária preservação.

This essay is about the Pátios and Vilas of Lisbon’s eastern waterfront, remainders of a way of living specific to the industrialization period that Portugal went through starting in the mid nineteenth century. Following a re-evaluation of the typologies currently available to categorize Lisbon’s Pátios and Vilas, we analysed the transformations undergone by the Marvila and Beato’s riverfront, characterizing the region’s history and urban development over the past two centuries, since it became one of Lisbon’s main industrial area, and addressing its various stages of development until the de-industrialization of the late twentieth century and up to present days. We conducted case studies of the region’s Pátios and Vilas, in order to know the history of this working class housing, currently characterized by widespread degradation, and also retrieving, by the combined use of Oral History, some of the ways of life of its populations. Recognizing the risk of disappearance of these Pátios and Vilas of the oriental riverfront boroughs and of the memory references that made up the daily life of its inhabitants, we analysed some of the urban rehabilitation projects already tested or planned out for this region and its old working class housing, and how municipal entities like the DRUPV and the SRU Oriental perceived them and intended to recover them. From the intersection of this studies we expect to bring a contribution to the understanding of these housing units, adding also some proposals or clues to their necessary preservation.
