Investment project analysis: The impact of C09 project on Celbi’s evolution

Abstract

In this dissertation is made an analysis of the investment Project called C09, developed in the manufacturing facilities of Celbi S.A. in 2010. The main goal is to expose the framework which led to the decision to proceed with the Project in September of 2006 evaluated in 320M EUR. This report focuses, mainly, in two crucial moments for the Company: the year before the Project’s implementation (2005) and the maturity year of the Project, i.e. 2011. In relation to the period before the project, it is analyzed the market situation at the time as well as the market perspectives, showing simultaneously, the existing need of renovation of many critical areas on its production process. On this pre-Project context, an economic/financial analysis of Celbi is also conducted. Regarding the Project, in the case study the assumptions incurred in the preparation of the forecasts are evaluated, with the subsequent analysis of the, deviations when compared with the actual situation. At this point, the focus is on the impact of the construction of a new Thermoelectric Biomass in the deviations from the budget in the execution of the Project C09. Hereupon, a study is conducted about the real impact of the Project on Celbi’s results, being also considered the evolution observed in the pulp market. Making a comparative analysis, it is concluded that the Project had some positive and negative deviations relative to what was expected. However, compared to the favorable progress of the global market of pulp, the Project ended up having a positive impact on the overall operating results of Celbi.

Neste trabalho realiza-se uma análise ao Projeto de investimento designado por C09, desenvolvido nas instalações fabris da Celbi S.A. em 2010. O objetivo é expor o enquadramento que levou à decisão de avançar com o Projeto em Setembro de 2006 avaliado em 320M EUR. Este trabalho foca-se, essencialmente, em dois momentos cruciais para a empresa: o ano exatamente anterior ao Projeto (2005) e o ano de maturidade do mesmo, i.e. 2011. Em relação ao período anterior ao Projeto, analisa-se a situação de mercado à data, assim como as perspetivas em relação ao mesmo, mostrando ao mesmo tempo a necessidade existente de renovação de algumas áreas críticas no seu processo produtivo. Neste contexto pré-projecto, também se efetua uma análise económico-financeira da Celbi. Relativamente ao Projeto, no estudo do caso avaliam-se os pressupostos assumidos na elaboração das previsões base, analisando posteriormente, os desvios comparativamente com a situação real. Neste ponto, é abordado o impacto da construção de uma nova Central Termoeléctrica a Biomassa nos desvios ao orçamento na execução do Projeto C09. Posto isto, é realizado um estudo sobre o impacto real do Projeto nos resultados da Celbi, sendo também considerada a evolução verificada no mercado da pasta de papel. Fazendo a análise comparativa, conclui-se que o Projeto teve alguns desvios negativos e positivos em relação ao esperado. Contudo, face ao progresso favorável do mercado global da pasta de papel, o Projeto acabou por ter um impacto positivo nos resultados operacionais da Celbi.
