Empatia e agressividade na adolescência e sucesso escolar

Abstract

A adolescência é caraterizada como uma etapa da vida em que a relação com os pares é um fator determinante para a socialização. Contudo, este processo nem sempre é pacífico. Trata-se de um crescimento exigente quer ao nível das relações quer ao nível do desenvolvimento cognitivo/ aprendizagem. Analisar a relação entre empatia e tendências agressivas; avaliar a relação entre sucesso escolar e empatia, e o que os adolescentes consideram sucesso escolar constituiu o objeto deste estudo aplicado a 232 alunos entre os 12 e os 18 anos de idade. Para o efeito, utilizou-se, para a empatia, as escalas IRI e AES. Para a agressividade, usou-se as escalas DIAS e AQ. Elaborou-se um questionário para avaliar o sucesso escolar. Este estudo confirmou os dados conhecidos sobre empatia e agressividade: quanto maior a empatia menor agressividade. A idade dos adolescentes parece ter alguma influência nos níveis de empatia, verificando-se o mais elevado nos mais novos e nos mais velhos (12 e 18 anos). Quanto à agressividade, esta manifesta-se mais no sexo masculino e nos jovens com 16 anos de idade. Na relação entre empatia e sucesso escolar, confirmou-se que esta afeta os adolescentes. O facto de conseguir passar de ano e ter de aprender com esforço tem maior importância como definição de sucesso escolar para os alunos do 3º ciclo. Os alunos mais velhos dão maior importância a ser bem sucedido no que fazem na escola, à sua organização, à aprovação nos exames e à boa relação com os professores.

Adolescence is a stage in life in which the relationship with one´s peers is an important factor for socialization. However this is not always a pacific process. It involves the difficult growing up process in relationships as well as at the cognitive level. The objective of this paper is to analyze in 232 students, between 12 and 18 years, the relationship between empathy and aggressive tendencies and to evaluate the relationship between empathy and what the adolescents consider success in school. For empathy we used the IRI and AES scale and for aggressiveness the DIAS and AQ method. A questionnaire was elaborated to evaluate success at school. This study confirmed what we already knew about empathy and aggressiveness: greater the empathy less is the aggressiveness present. The age of the adolescents seems to influence the level of empathy. It is more present in the younger generation and in the older students (between 12 and 18 years). Aggressiveness is more frequent in the male students and in 16 year olds. We confirmed that empathy and success at school affected all adolescents. The 3 rd grade students define success at school as passing the academic year and difficulty in learning. For the older students it is more important to be successful in school activities, their organization, passing the exams and having a good relationship with the teachers.
