Empreender com sucesso nos Açores e na Ilha Terceira: onde, como e porquê?

Abstract

Esta investigação tem como tema “Empreender com Sucesso nos Açores e na Ilha Terceira: Onde, Como e Porquê?”. Esta é precisamente a grande questão de investigação e que se torna altamente pertinente numa altura em que se vive uma grave crise socioeconómica, onde entre outras consequências, as empresas têm cada vez mais dificuldades e o poder de compra da população diminui cada vez mais. Este estudo pretende servir como uma base sólida para todos os que pretendam empreender nos Açores. Conhecer as características da Região, os seus pontos fortes e fracos, a mentalidade da sua população e as oportunidades que daqui surgem são assim grandes objetivos desta investigação. Para se cumprir estes objetivos houve a necessidade de efetuar uma pesquisa alargada tendo sido efetuadas entrevistas a pessoas com conhecimentos relevantes nesta temática em cinco locais (Açores, Portugal Continental, Espanha, Suécia e E.U.A), questionários, visitas “in loco” e recolhida informação pré-existente. Daqui resultou que apesar dos Açores possuírem um índice de empreendedorismo baixo, cerca de metade dos estudantes açorianos têm ambição de vir a criar a sua empresa o que é um bom indicador para o futuro. O pequeno e fragmentado mercado interno, os elevados custos de transporte, a distância aos grandes centros de desenvolvimento e a dificuldade em se atingirem economias de escala constituem alguns dos principais obstáculos ao empreendedorismo. As soluções passam sobretudo por encontrar nichos de mercado específicos, empreender em projetos direcionados para a exportação, de alto valor acrescentado e procurando mercados sofisticados, com maior poder de compra.

This research subject is “Successful Entrepreneurship in the Azores and in Terceira Island: Where, How and Why?”. These are the main questions in this research which make it very relevant nowadays as we are facing a big socio-economic crisis and, among other consequences, companies are having more and more difficulties and the purchasing power of families is decreasing. This study wants to be a solid basis for everyone that wants to be an entrepreneur in the Azores. Get to know the characteristics of the Region, its strengths and weaknesses, its population mentality and the opportunities that arise from these conditions are the main goals of this research. In order to accomplish the goals of this research it was necessary to do a much extended search including interviews in five locations (the Azores, Portuguese mainland, Spain, Sweden and U.S.A) with people that have recognize knowledge in this subject, questionnaires, in loco observations and collect pre-existing information. The results showed that besides the low entrepreneurship index in the Azores, about half of the Azorean students have the ambition to start their own business which may be a good indicator for the future. The small and fragmented domestic market, the high transportation costs, the big distance from the large centers and the difficult to get economies of scale are some of the main barriers to the entrepreneurship in the Azores. The main solutions for entrepreneurs in the Azores are to find some specific niche markets, engage in exported-oriented projects with high value products/services and find more sophisticated markets where buyers have more purchasing power.
