The present investigation focuses on bullying, a topic which has been the target of great attention within the school environment. A retrospective study was performed in order to contribute to a better understanding of this phenomenon in Portugal. The focus of the investigation is to determine the extent of self satisfaction and happiness of people within the following five groups; those with no involvement in bullying, those who have witnessed bullying, the bullies themselves, victims of bullying and those who have been both bullies and victims. The subjects were asked to respond to an online questionnaire relating to the following topics; retrospective bullying, subjective well being, self-esteem and satisfaction with social support. The study consisted of 616 young adult participants aged between 23 and 40 years, who described their experiences of bullying during their school years as belonging to the following categories; bystanders (39.3%), bullies (4.2%), victims (23.2%); bully/victims (4.4%) and uninvolved (28.9%). A higher proportion of those involved in situations of school bullying, either as bullies or both bullies and victims of bullying, were male participants, with no significant correlation with age observed. When comparing the responses of the uninvolved to those who were victims of bullying, significant differences were observed. Victims of bullying displayed a lower perception of their subjective well being (as demonstrated by a greater presence of negative emotions, lack of positive emotions and less life satisfaction), less self esteem and a lower satisfaction with social support, and the dependent variables within the study are found to be positively related. The results of the study therefore show that it is extremely necessary to introduce preventative and intervention programmes in order to reduce the long-term consequences on those who were subjects of bullying during their school years, especially for those who maintain a profile of high risk throughout the years. |
