The purpose of this study was to create a solid reflection about infertility, the way people deal with it both personally and socially, and the mechanisms that different contexts of living may provide in the search for a solution to childlessness. This study results from the articulation of empirical and bibliographical investigation around the subject of infertility, the transnational movements caused by the necessity to solve it biomedically, and the different forms of dealing with the incapacity to bear children (with special focus in Sub-Saharan Africa and the PALOP). The region of Sub-Saharan Africa presents itself as one of the most problematic areas, in which, side by side coexists a strong social pressure to reproduction along with some of the highest rates of infertility. The poor quality of healthcare services and the difficulties people experience in trying to use them, the existence of restrictive laws or the lack of assisted reproduction technologies can turn into seeds of the transnational movements concerning reproductive medicine. This is more evident when you look at the informal connections and bridges created by individuals in the process of crossing borders in the search for infertility treatment abroad. Portugal appears in this picture as a destination some couples choose for their treatment, manly couples from the PALOP, especially Angola. Articulated with a more theoretical reflection on medically assisted reproduction, infertility and international movements concerning this matters, this study aims to be an approach to the main characteristics and size of the phenomenon. The purpose of this account is to perceive the broader picture that affects and is affected by the morphology and magnitude of the transnational movements of foreign people, namely from the PALOP, to Portugal in search for medically assisted reproduction techniques. |
