Valores e serviço militar : A propensão para o alistamento da população jovem portuguesa

Abstract

Em Portugal, como noutros países do Ocidente, tem se verificado uma crescente dificuldade em preencher as fileiras das Forças Armadas com jovens voluntários. Num panorama de crescente incerteza face à segurança e estabilidade geopolítica, torna-se pertinente compreender as causas desta dificuldade na perspetiva dos jovens. Através de entrevistas a jovens Portugueses, civis e militares, procurou-se traçar os seus perfis com base nas suas experiências e práticas na juventude, contactos com e perceções sobre as Forças Armadas Portuguesas, representações culturais de Forças Armadas e o seus Valores Pessoais, a fim de averiguar e tentar explicar o que levou os militares a alistarem-se e a propensão para o alistamento dos civis. Os resultados da amostra revelam que os militares tendem a ter desempenho escolar mediano, a ser oriundos de classes sociais mais baixas com cuidadores sem Ensino Superior, ainda que os civis com propensão para o alistamento tenham perfis mais diversos, ambos são propensos a demonstrar valores pessoais orientados na dimensão conservação. Os entrevistados civis sem interesse apresentam fortes inclinações para os valores pessoais do universalismo e tendem a ser de classes sociais médias/altas, a ter bom desempenho escolar e vocação para o ensino superior. Militares e civis com propensão aparentam ter contactos com as Forças Armadas e representações culturais de Forças Armadas mais frequentes que os civis sem interesse, sendo que os pontos de influência mais relevantes que foram identificados foram os filmes, videojogos e o círculo próximo dos jovens (família, amigos e colegas).

In Portugal, as in other western countries, there has been an increasing difficulty in filling the ranks of the Armed Forces with young volunteers. In a panorama of increasing uncertainty regarding safety and geopolitical stability, it is important to understand the causes behind this hurdle through the perspective of the youth. This study attempts to outline a profile of young Portuguese people through interviews, both civilian and military service members, based on their experiences and habits in youth, contacts with the Portuguese Armed Forces and cultural representations of the military and their personal values, with the aim of trying to explain what led the service members to enlist and the civilians’ enlistment propensity. Results show that in the sample military service members tend to have mid school performance, come from lower social classes with parents without higher education, even though civilians with propensity to enlist tend to have more diverse backgrounds, both groups tend to show personal values aligned with conservation. Civilian interviewees with no interest in military service show strong inclination toward Universalist personal values and tend come from middle to upper social classes, have good school performance and vocation towards Higher Education. Military Service Members and civilians with propensity to enlist seem to have more frequent contact with the Armed Forces and cultural representation of the military compared to uninterested civilians, with the most relevant points of influence identified being movies, videogames and young people’s inner circle (family, friends and colleagues).
