A ponte oportuna : Revitalização do mercado de arte contemporânea lisboeta

Abstract

A cultura é um setor económico gerador de riqueza, emprego e externalidades positivas, ganhando crescente relevância nas agendas académicas e políticas internacionais. Paralelamente, a diluição das fronteiras, impulsionada pela globalização, tem incentivado empresas culturais – especialmente as dedicadas à produção de feiras de arte – a expandirem a sua marca, sendo a Art Basel um exemplo paradigmático. Nos últimos quinze anos, Lisboa ganhou notoriedade internacional, em grande parte devido à turistificação e à chegada de novos investidores, destacando-se a criação da ARCOlisboa em 2016, bem como o surgimento de novas galerias, museus e eventos de arte contemporânea. Estes projetos reforçam a presença de Lisboa no mercado global de arte contemporânea, ao mesmo tempo que dialogam com as dinâmicas já existentes no circuito artístico local e geram novas oportunidades e conexões. A presente dissertação analisa a evolução do mercado de arte contemporânea em Lisboa desde o século XX até ao presente, com especial foco no período pós-ARCOlisboa. Devido à escassez de literatura, foram realizadas entrevistas a diferentes agentes do mercado, permitindo compreender as interconexões sociológicas, políticas e económicas que sustentam o crescimento dos projetos de arte contemporânea na cidade. O estudo oferece uma perspetiva integrada sobre a inserção de Lisboa no mercado global de arte contemporânea, contribuindo para a compreensão das suas transformações culturais e económicas.

Culture is an economic sector that generates wealth, employment, and positive externalities, gaining increasing relevance in academic and international policy agendas. At the same time, the erosion of borders, driven by globalization, has encouraged cultural enterprises – particularly those dedicated to organizing art fairs – to expand their brand, with Art Basel serving as a paradigmatic example. Over the past fifteen years, Lisbon has gained international prominence, largely due to the city’s touristification and the arrival of new investors, highlighted by the creation of ARCOlisboa in 2016, as well as the emergence of new galleries, museums, and contemporary art events. These projects strengthen Lisbon’s presence in the global contemporary art market while engaging with existing dynamics within the local art circuit and creating new opportunities and connections. This dissertation analyzes the evolution of the contemporary art market in Lisbon from the 20th century to the present, with particular focus on the period following the launch of ARCOlisboa. Given the scarcity of literature on the subject, interviews were conducted with various market agents, allowing for a deeper understanding of the sociological, political, and economic interconnections that underpin the growth of contemporary art projects in the city. The study provides an integrated perspective on Lisbon’s insertion into the global contemporary art market, contributing to the understanding of the city’s cultural and economic transformations.
