From Maastricht to Lisbon: A comparative analysis on the organizational dynamics of TEFAF and LAAF

Abstract

‘From Maastricht to Lisbon: A Comparative Analysis on the Organisational Dynamics of TEFAF and LAAF’, the present dissertation offers an in-depth comparison between two European art fairs: TEFAF (The European Fine Art Foundation) Maastricht, and LAAF (Lisbon Art & Antiques Fair). The main aim of this study is to analyse the organisational structures of the fairs, starting with their historical contexts, operational frameworks and impacts on the global art markets. It started with a historical overview of art fairs, highlighting the growing importance of these events in the art world. The methodology used is then described, using a qualitative analysis of various internal and external documentation of both fairs. Part of the dissertation focuses on TEFAF, which is known for its strict organisational practices and criteria imposed. LAAF, will be also examined in the context of the Portuguese art market, highlighting its organisational structure and the various criteria used. At the end of the study, a detailed comparative analysis was carried out between the two fairs, revealing significant differences in terms of their scale, international presence and operating models, among others. The dissertation concludes by reflecting on how LAAF can improve its presence in the art world and expand its influence, analysing the best practices of major international fairs, such as TEFAF. Ultimately, the dissertation contributes to the wider discussion on the role of art fairs in shaping the global art market.

“From Maastricht to Lisbon: A Comparative Analysis on the Organisational Dynamics of TEFAF and LAAF”, a presente dissertação oferece uma comparação aprofundada entre duas feiras de arte europeias: A TEFAF (The European Fine Art Foundation) Maastricht, e a LAAF (Lisbon Art & Antiques Fair). O principal objetivo deste estudo, será a análise das estruturas organizacionais das feiras, começando pelos seus contextos históricos, quadros operacionais e impactos nos mercados de arte global. Inicia-se com uma visão histórica das feiras de arte, destacando a importância crescente destes eventos no mundo da arte. De seguida, é descrita a metodologia utilizada, recorrendo a uma análise qualitativa, de diversas documentações internas e externas de ambas as feiras. Parte da dissertação centra-se na TEFAF, conhecida pelas suas rigorosas práticas organizacionais e critérios impostos. Outro foco será a LAAF, examinada no âmbito do mercado de arte português, destacando também a sua estrutura organizacional e os diversos critérios por esta utilizados. No fim do estudo foi realizada uma análise comparativa detalhada entre as duas feiras, revelando diferenças significativas em termos das suas escalas, presenças internacionais e modelos operacionais, entre outros. A dissertação conclui com uma reflexão sobre a forma como a LAAF poderá melhorar a sua presença no mundo da arte e expandir a sua influência, adotando as melhores práticas das grandes feiras internacionais, como a TEFAF. Como última análise, a dissertação contribui para a discussão mais alargada sobre o papel das feiras de arte na formação do mercado da arte mundial.
