The use of disruptive technologies in supply chains and their impact on sustainability

Abstract

The widespread use of disruptive technologies in supply chains has enabled organizations to meet sustainability demands from customers, stakeholders, and regulators. However, while the impacts of these technologies on sustainability are acknowledged, how they alter the interactions between the economic, social, and environmental pillars remains unclear. This dissertation aims to analyse the effects of disruptive technologies on the relationships between sustainability pillars in portuguese manufacturing supply chains, advancing knowledge of the synergies and trade-offs that may emerge in this context. Data collection for this investigation involved three methods: a systematic literature review (SLR), where 45 articles on disruptive technologies in sustainable supply chains were examined to form a foundation for the remaining methods; a questionnaire, which gathered 24 responses from managers belonging to different organizations in manufacturing supply chains; and five semi-structured interviews with managers specialized in operations management. This investigation identifies key technologies in sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) and their roles across economic, environmental and social dimensions, as well as synergies and trade-offs that may occur. In the context of the sample, managers recognize sustainability impacts, but challenges were found in linking them to specific disruptive technologies. It was possible to identify a tendency of increasing economic-social synergies, however the trade-offs did not reflect direct impacts, but rather the concerns of firms, to which they responded with mitigations. These results highlight the use of disruptive technology in supply chains fostering a human-centric approach.

O uso generalizado de tecnologias disruptivas nas cadeias de abastecimento permitiu às organizações responder às exigências de consumidores, partes interessadas e reguladores para serem mais sustentáveis. No entanto, embora os impactos das tecnologias disruptivas na sustentabilidade sejam reconhecidos, ainda é pouco claro como estas tecnologias alteram as relações entre os pilares económico, social e ambiental da sustentabilidade. O principal objetivo desta dissertação é analisar os efeitos das tecnologias disruptivas nas relações entre os pilares da sustentabilidade nas cadeias de abastecimento da indústria transformadora em Portugal, avançando no conhecimento sobre sinergias e trade-offs que possam ocorrer neste contexto. Os dados foram recolhidos através de três métodos: uma revisão sistemática da literatura, onde foram analisados 45 artigos relevantes sobre o uso de tecnologias disruptivas em cadeias de abastecimento sustentáveis; um questionário que obteve 24 respostas de gestores de diferentes organizações pertencentes a cadeias de abastecimento da indústria transformadora; e cinco entrevistas semi-estruturadas com profissionais especializados em gestão de operações. Esta investigação identifica tecnologias chave na gestão da cadeia de abastecimento sustentável e seus impactos nas dimensões económica, ambiental e social, assim como as sinergias e trade-offs que podem surgir. No contexto amostral, os gestores reconhecem os impactos na sustentabilidade, mas tiveram dificuldades em associá-los a tecnologias disruptivas específicas. Identificou-se uma tendência crescente de sinergias económico-sociais, porém os trade-offs não refletiram impactos diretos, mas sim preocupações das organizações ao qual responderam com mitigações. Os resultados indicam um uso de tecnologias disruptivas em cadeias de abastecimento seguindo uma abordagem centrada no ser humano.
