Participação cultural e classes populares: Narrativas individuais

Abstract

O direito de participação cultural é defendido pela Declaração Mundial dos Direitos Humanos, assim como a Constituição da República Portuguesa, como tal, os mais diversos agentes culturais desempenham um grande esforço para estabelecer um maior compromisso com os seus públicos. Entrem esses públicos inserem-se indivíduos com dificuldades socioeconómicas. Portugal apresenta, quando comparado com outros países europeus, baixos índices de participação cultural, sendo que o perfil dos participantes tende a tecer uma imagem de indivíduos mais instruídos, socioeconomicamente mais confortáveis, arrastando, por vezes, certas comunidades para um perigo de exclusão cultural. Contudo, estas instituições culturais têm como missão a promoção de uma maior acessibilidade, inclusão social, promoção de bem- estar. Embora uma análise da literatura da temática possa induzir em erro, a verdade é que existe uma vasta participação cultural da dita classe popular, com uma história bastante rica, destacando-se pela heterogeneidade das atividades realizadas, assim como em atividades culturais “eruditas”. Na presente dissertação encontramos um estudo cingido ao distrito do Porto, com o recurso a entrevistas de caráter narrativo realizadas a três indivíduos com dificuldades socioeconómicas. Recolheram-se dados primários e secundários, resultando no confronto entre as duas perspetivas – a oferta e a procura, focando-se, principalmente, nesta última. Os resultados obtidos mostram uma participação ativa na vida cultural por parte dos entrevistados, com referência aos interesses dos mesmos, assim como as limitações e impedimentos que enfrentam. Encontraram-se pontos de divergência e convergência entre as práticas culturais dos entrevistados e a literatura existente, assim como com a missão dos agentes culturais da cidade do Porto.

The right of cultural participation is defended on the Human Rights Declaration, as well as on the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic. As such, the conglomerate of cultural agents make a great effort to establish a greater commitment to their audiences. These audiences include people with socio-economic difficulties. Compared to other European countries, Portugal has low rates of cultural participation, and the profile of participants tends to paint an image of more educated, socio-economically comfortable individuals, sometimes dragging certain communities into the danger of cultural exclusion. However, the mission of these cultural institutions is to promote greater accessibility, social inclusion and well-being. Although an analysis of the literature on the subject can be misleading, the truth is that there is a vast cultural participation of the so-called popular class, with a very rich history, standing out for the heterogeneity of the activities carried out, as well as in “erudite” cultural activities. This dissertation is a study of the district of Porto, using narrative interviews with three individuals with socio-economic difficulties. Primary and secondary data was collected, resulting in a confrontation between the two perspectives - supply and demand, focusing mainly on the latter. The results show an active participation in cultural life on the part of the interviewees, with reference to their interests, as well as the limitations and impediments they face. Points of divergence and convergence were found between the interviewees' cultural practices and the existing literature, as well as with the mission of cultural agents in the city of Porto.
