Social media and the Israeli-Palestinian question: An analysis of the main narrative themes of the Israel defense forces and Hamas on X during the May 2021 crisis

Abstract

Social media has proven to be a crucial tool for both states and non-state actors in advancing their political interests. In this context, this dissertation sought to understand the main themes of the narratives of the Israel Defense Forces and Hamas on the X platform during the May 2021 crisis. As such, all the tweets published by these two actors during the period in question were collected and analyzed using thematic analysis. It was concluded that the narrative of the Israel Defense Forces focused mainly on the impact of the belligerent actions of the Palestinian side on the population of Gaza, on Israel's military power and the country's ability to defend itself against external threats, and on the characterization of Palestinian militant groups as terrorists. In relation to Hamas, the most prominent themes were the description of the state of Israel as Nazi and terrorist, the complicity of the Western and Arab world in the Palestinian situation, and international support for the Palestinian cause. However, despite the differences between the two sides, both not only resorted to victimization to advance their narratives, but also used their minorities as tools to highlight the enemy's hostility. In addition, they both showed themselves to be invested in maintaining resistance despite the adversities.

As redes sociais têm-se mostrado uma ferramenta crucial tanto para estados como para atores não-estatais no avanço dos seus interesses políticos. Neste contexto, esta dissertação procurou entender quais os principais temas das narrativas das Forças de Defesa de Israel e do Hamas na plataforma X durante a crise de maio de 2021. Como tal, recorreu-se à recolha de todos os tweets publicados por estes dois atores no período em questão, que foram examinados através de análise temática. Concluiu-se que a narrativa das Forças de Defesa de Israel focaram-se sobretudo no impacto das ações beligerantes do lado palestiniano na população de Gaza, no poder militar de Israel e a capacidade do país de se defender perante ameaças externas, e na caracterização de grupos militantes palestinianos como terroristas. Em relação ao Hamas, os temas que mais se destacaram foram a descrição do Estado de Israel como Nazi e terrorista, a cumplicidade do mundo ocidental e árabe na situação palestiniana, e o apoio internacional da causa da Palestina. Porém, apesar das diferenças entre os dois lados, ambos não só recorreram à vitimização para avançar as suas narrativas, como utilizaram as suas minorias como ferramentas para evidenciar a hostilidade do inimigo. Para além disso, mostraram-se os dois investidos em manter a resistência apesar das adversidades.
