Standards culturais portugueses: ponto de vista espanhol

Abstract

O trabalho apresentado tem como objectivo primordial definir os standards culturais dos portugueses, sob o ponto de vista espanhol. É apresentado o estudo das cinco dimensões de Hofstede, mas é partir do Método dos Standards Culturais que se chegará à identificação dos standards. Este método consegue diferenciar e evidenciar as diferenças entre dois países que à partida podem ser considerados idênticos, sendo por isso considerado uma forma inovadora de pesquisa de diferenças culturais, distinguindo-se das abordagens clássicas como a de Hofstede. Para tal, foram efectuadas entrevistas narrativas a um conjunto de espanhóis que residem ou já residiram em Portugal, verificaram-se as principais diferenças entre Portugal e Espanha e foram analisados os pontos mais focados por todos os entrevistados identificando-se assim os cinco standards culturais dos portugueses: elevado nível de formalismo e hierarquização; vivem para trabalhar e não trabalham para viver; a visão do tempo; tradicionalismo nos horários; e capacidade de adaptação. Cada um dos standards é analisado de forma a compreender as especificidades de cada um e, adicionalmente, é analisada a existência de uma correlação entre os dois métodos, ou seja, se através da aplicação do Método dos Standards Culturais é possível chegar às mesmas conclusões do estudo de Hofstede. Deste modo, pretende-se melhorar o conhecimento que ambas as culturas têm uma da outra, tentando ajudar um Espanhol que decida viver em Portugal a adaptar-se de uma forma mais rápida e pacífica à cultura e realidades portuguesas.

The main objective of this thesis is to define the cultural standards of Portuguese people, under the Spanish perspective. The five dimensions of Hofstede are described on this thesis, although the identification of the standards is in accordance with the Cultural Standard Method. This method can distinguish and highlight the differences between two countries that may be considered identical at the beginning, and therefore it is considered as an innovative approach to search for cultural differences, compared to conventional approaches such as the Hofstede’s approach. By this fact, narrative interviews were conducted to Spanish people, who live or have lived in Portugal. Afterwards, the major differences were identified between Portugal and Spain, the most common points focused by the interviews were analysed and finally, there were identified five cultural standards concerning Portuguese people: high level of formality and hierarchy; live to work rather than work to live; the view of time; traditionalism of schedules; and adaptability. The standards are analysed in order to understand its features, but the existence of a correlation between those two methods is also analysed, meaning that through the application of the Cultural Method Standard I will verify if it is possible to reach the same conclusions as the study of Hofstede. Hence, the objective is to improve the knowledge that both cultures have of each other and to try to help a Spanish person that decides to live in Portugal to have an easier and peaceful accommodation to the Portuguese reality.
