Resumo: | This study explores the lived experiences of youths with dwarfism in Ghana, focusing on the challenges they face, the coping strategies they employ, the social support services available to them, and the influence of Ghanaian cultural norms on their identities. The objective of this study is to investigate the lived experiences of youths with dwarfism in Ghana, with a specific focus on understanding the challenges they encounter and identifying potential avenues for support and intervention. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews with 10 youths with dwarfism and two social service providers. The Snowball Effect sampling technique was used to identify participants, and data were collected through audio-recorded interviews conducted in locations convenient to the participants. Data analysis involved transcription of audio files, followed by coding and thematic analysis using NVivo software. The findings of the study revealed multifaceted challenges faced by youths with dwarfism in Ghana, including societal stigma, discrimination, and practical barriers to education and employment. Despite these challenges, participants exhibited resilience and resourcefulness through their coping strategies and utilization of social support networks. The study also highlighted the influence of Ghanaian cultural norms on shaping the identities of individuals with dwarfism, emphasizing the need for awareness and advocacy to combat societal biases. Based on the findings, it is recommended that policymakers and practitioners prioritize initiatives aimed at promoting awareness, inclusivity, and advocacy to address societal barriers faced by youths with dwarfism. Additionally, targeted interventions should be developed to improve access to education, employment, and social services for individuals with dwarfism in Ghana |
