Produção e circulação de estereótipos sobre os africanos nos registros fotográficos da Sociedade Colonial Alemã (1909-1939)

Abstract

Procuro refletir neste artigo como os regimes de representação são formados e operam a partir da cultura visual e, em especial, busco discutir a política de visualidade da Sociedade Colonial Alemã. Afirmo, primeiramente, que a utilização de estereótipos no trabalho incessante e repetitivo de determinada prática representacional em fixar um significado único sobre certo tema é um dos pilares para a produção e manutenção de tal tentativa. No caso aqui apresentado, trabalho com a noção de “olhar etnográfico” na produção visual da alteridade absoluta do sujeito africano. Em um segundo momento, procuro evidenciar como significados que se pretendem estanques sofrem importantes flutuações semânticas. Finalmente, apresento de que forma estas imagens circulavam no meio da política imperialista alemã do século XX.

I aim to reflect in this article how the representational regimes are formed and operate from the visual culture and, especially, I try to discuss the German Colonial Society visual politics. I claim, in the first place, that the use of stereotypes in the incessant and repetitive work of certain representational practice to determine an exclusive meaning about certain theme is one of the basis to the production and reproduction of such effort. In this case, I work with the concept of ‘ethnographical gaze’ in the visual production of the absolute otherness of the African subject. Secondly, I aim to point how the meanings that are thought to be rigid suffer important semantic changes. Finally, I present in which ways those images circulated amidst the German imperialist politics of the twentieth century.
