Traumas do Império: História, Memória e Identidade Nacional

Abstract

No presente texto, procura-se avaliar o peso de alguns dos principais traumas que marcaram a história imperial portuguesa na formação da memoria colectiva, na construção da narrativa identitária nacional. Como pontos de referencia, tomámos sucessivamente o desastre de Alcácer-Quibir, a desagregação do império luso-brasileiro, o ultimatum inglês de 1890 e a descolonização final (com as fortes resistências que encontrou). Nas conclusões, tenta-se caracterizar a memória colectiva formada a partir desses traumas – vendo-se nela uma memória ferida ou mesmo doente, por incapaz de efectuar o correspondente trabalho de luto. Finalmente, faz-se uma breve alusão à relação entre memoria e historiografia, sopesando-se a capacidade desta última para alterar o carácter bipolar da narrativa identitária portuguesa sempre oscilante entre a depressão e a euforia.

In this paper we try to evaluate the weight of some of the most important traumas that shaped the Portuguese imperial history in the information of collective memory and in the construction of the national identity narrative. As reference points, we took successively the disaster of Alcácer-Quibir, the desegregation of the Portuguese-Brazilian empire, the English ultimatum of 1890 and the final decolonisation (with the strong resistances it aroused). In the conclusions, the paper attempts to characterise the collective memory shaped by those traumas - seeing in it a wounded memory or a sick memory, not capable of making the correspondent mooring work. Finally, one makes a brief allusion to the relation between memory and historiography, evaluating the latter’s capacity between depression and euphoria.
