Determinantes da intenção de investimento em criptoativos em Portugal

Abstract

Considerando o atual panorama do sistema financeiro, os criptoativos têm potencial para mudar a forma como a sociedade se estrutura a vários níveis, nomeadamente pela transação de meios monetários por via de criptomoedas, pelo financiamento de empresas em fase inicial de projetos com Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) e pelo armazenamento de ativos com recurso a Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). No entanto, ainda existe um conjunto significativo de riscos e desafios, nomeadamente ao nível da segurança, sustentabilidade ambiental e compreensão tecnológica. Posto isto, o investimento nesta relativamente recente tipologia de ativos irá certamente continuar a marcar o mundo das finanças num futuro próximo, o que justificará o interesse crescente da literatura nesta temática. O objetivo da presente dissertação passa por identificar e analisar quais os principais fatores determinantes que influenciam a intenção de adquirir criptoativos em Portugal. O modelo estimado obteve uma percentagem de variância explicada de cerca de 70%, e permitiu concluir que os indivíduos são fortemente influenciados pela qualidade percebida do investimento, influência social e perceção em relação às próprias competências para a realização do investimento. Contrariamente, fatores como a perceção de risco, a sustentabilidade ambiental e os recursos necessários para o investimento não assumiram significância estatística. Tais resultados poderão servir de apoio aos reguladores e promotores de criptoativos, uma vez que uma melhor compreensão do comportamento dos investidores facilitará a seleção de medidas regulamentares e a formulação estratégias de negócio mais fiáveis e eficazes.

In light of the current financial system, cryptoassets have a considerable potential for changing various aspects of society, including the transaction of monetary means through cryptocurrencies, the financing of companies in the initial phases of projects through Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) and the storage of assets through Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). Nevertheless, they are still subject to certain risks and challenges, particularly regarding security, environmental sustainability, and technological understanding. This being said, investments in this relatively recent type of assets will certainly continue to dominate the world of finance in the near future, which will justify the growing interest in literature on this subject. The purpose of this dissertation is to identify and analyze the main factors that influence the intention to acquire cryptoassets in Portugal. From the study, which obtained a percentage of explained variance of around 70%, it was possible to conclude that individuals are strongly influenced by the perceived quality of the investment, social influence and perception of their own skills to invest. Conversely, factors such as risk perception, environmental sustainability and resources needed for investment did not assume statistical significance. Such results can be beneficial for regulators and promoters of cryptoassets, as a better understanding of investor behavior will facilitate the selection of regulatory measures and the formulation of more reliable and effective business strategies.
