A Bitcoin nas transações comerciais

Abstract

O mercado das moedas virtuais tem vindo a crescer bastante desde 2008, tanto em número de novas moedas como em número de investidores e transações. A Bitcoin é uma moeda digital que foi introduzida ao público, de modo anónimo, em 2009 durante um período de crise económica. Devido às suas vantagens, tanto investidores como governantes estão interessados em definir o que é a Bitcoin num contexto económico. Este trabalho tem dois objetivos principais. O primeiro passa por compreender se a Bitcoin será o futuro das Transações Comerciais. O segundo objetivo pretende identificar quais os riscos e benefícios associados ao desenvolvimento e adoção desta moeda digital. A Bitcoin tem estado numa crescente difusão devido não só às grandes oscilações do seu valor, mas também por motivos monetários e políticos. Cada vez mais existe a dúvida se esta moeda pode ou não ser uma alternativa ao sistema atual, ou até mesmo que possam coexistir. As Criptomoedas estão, de um modo crescente, a ganhar protagonismo como ativos financeiros e começam a ganhar terreno como moeda nas transações comerciais. Esta moeda digital pode ser utilizada como Meio de Troca, no entanto ainda há muitas inseguranças e entraves nesta matéria que serão abordados ao longo desta investigação, sendo a Reserva de Valor a finalidade mais utilizada, atualmente, pelos investidores. Não estamos certos do que irá acontecer, nem se a Bitcoin será considerada a moeda do futuro, mas este foi um primeiro passo importante para haver um crescimento tecnológico marcante.

The Cryptocurrency Market has been booming since 2008, not only in terms of the number of new currencies but also in the number of investors and transactions. Bitcoin is a digital currency introduced to public anonymously in 2009, during a period of a big economic crisis. Due to its advantages, investors and governments are interested in determining Bitcoin in an economic context. This Thesis has two main objectives. The first is understanding if Bitcoin is going to be used in the future of Commercial Transactions. The second one is to better understand the benefits and risks associated in the development and adoption of this Cryptocurrency. Bitcoin is in an increasing diffusion due to, not only, the big value oscillations, but also for monetary and political reasons. That is an increasing doubt whether or not this currency is an alternative to the current system, or even if that it can coexist. Nowadays, Cryptocurrencies are increasingly gaining prominence as a financial asset and using Cryptocurrency in Commercial Transactions are actually gaining ground as well. This digital currency can be used as a Medium of Exchange, however there are still lots of insecurities and obstacles in this matter that will be addressed throughout this investigation, but with no doubts that the most used purpose is the Store of Value. We are not sure about what can happen in the future, nor whether if Bitcoin is going to be considered the future currency, but this was an important first step towards remarkable technological growth.
