Regenerar a terra, construindo comunidade: Dinâmicas locais de projetos regenerativos de base comunitária

Abstract

Os projetos regenerativos de base comunitária têm vindo a ser apontados como potenciais agentes de mitigação de problemas ambientais, tendo um papel central na construção de futuros mais justos. No entanto, o estabelecimento deste tipo de projetos em zonas rurais levanta questões ao nível do seu enraizamento local. Com este estudo pretendeu-se compreender as motivações e valores destes projetos com objetivos regenerativos, bem como o seu sentido de pertença e a sua relação com a comunidade local. De modo a explorar estas questões foram realizadas 10 entrevistas semiestruturadas a cinco projetos em Portugal, procedendo posteriormente à análise temática dos depoimentos. A partir da análise destacámos quatro temas principais: 1) Novos rurais à procura de novas formas de vida; 2) Regenerar a Terra construindo comunidade; 3) Ambiguidade do sentido de pertença; 4) Da desconfiança à aceitação: relação com a comunidade local. A análise sugere alguma ambiguidade relativamente ao sentido de pertença dos participantes bem como algumas dificuldades de integração na comunidade local. O estudo sugere também que os projetos procuram implementar estratégias para um envolvimento comunitário participativo, ressalvando, no entanto, a falta de atenção às relações de poder estabelecidas entre comunidades. Com base nestes e noutros resultados discute-se dificuldades e potencialidades de projetos regenerativos de base comunitária em contexto rural.

Community-based regenerative projects have been pointed out as potential agents in the mitigation of environmental problems, having a central role in the construction of just futures. However, the establishment of this type of projects in rural areas raises questions at the level of their local roots. This study aimed to understand the motivations and values of projects with regenerative goals, as well as their sense of belonging and relationship with the local community. In order to explore these issues, we conducted 10 semi-structured interviews with five Portuguese projects, which were then thematically analyzed. The analysis identified four main themes: 1) Neo-rurals in search of new lifestyles; 2) Regenerating the Earth while building community; 3) Ambiguity of the sense of belonging; 4) From distrust to acceptance: relationship with the local community. The analysis suggests an ambiguity in relation to the participants’ sense of belonging as well as some challenges of integration in the local community. The study also suggests that the projects seek to implement strategies for promoting community participation and engagement, noting, however, the lack of attention to the power relations within communities. Based on these and other results we discuss community-based regenerative projects’ difficulties and potentialities in rural context.
