Abuso e negligência infantil: O papel da sintomatologia psicopatológica materna nas práticas abusivas e negligentes

Abstract

O mau trato infantil é uma problemática que continua a marcar a atualidade, e pela qual se têm reunido esforços com o intuito de prevenir e intervir em situações em que as crianças e jovens estão expostos a práticas parentais maltratantes. São vários os preditores que estão associados a estas práticas, sendo que o quadro de sintomas psicopatológicos nos progenitores tem revelado um efeito importante na negligência e no abuso infantil. O presente estudo procurou examinar de forma sistemática se a sintomatologia psicopatológica materna está associada às práticas maternas abusivas e negligentes. A amostra deste estudo foi constituída por 197 mães, recrutadas em serviços de proteção infantil, escolas e serviços comunitários. Para tal, as participantes preencheram um conjunto de questionários, para avaliação do abuso infantil (CTS-PC), da negligência infantil (MNBS) e da sintomatologia psicopatológica (BSI). Adicionalmente, profissionais envolvidos com a criança-alvo preencheram um questionário de hetero-relato sobre as práticas abusivas e negligentes utilizadas pelas participantes (QMNeg). Os resultados mostraram que a sintomatologia psicopatológica das participantes está associada à negligência reportada pelos profissionais, e ao abuso, quando auto e hetero-reportado. Especificamente, a sensibilidade interpessoal, a depressão e a ideação paranoide foram os sintomas mais associados à negligência materna e a hostilidade a ideação paranoide às práticas abusivas. Os respetivos resultados têm implicações para a investigação futura e para a prevenção e intervenção em situações de mau trato infantil.

Child maltreatment is still a current problem. Several efforts have been made to prevent and intervene in situations where children and youths are exposed to abusive parenting practices. There are numerous predictors that have been associated with these practices, among which psychopathological symptoms in the parents that have revealed an important effect on child abuse and neglect. The current study systematically examines how maternal psychopathological symptomatology is associated with abusive and neglectful maternal practices. The study sample consisted of 197 mothers, recruited from child protection services, schools and community services. Participants completed a set of questionnaires to assess child abuse (CTS-PC), child neglect (MNBS) and psychopathological symptoms (BSI). Additionally, professionals involved with the target child filled out a hetero-report questionnaire about the abusive and negligent practices used by the participants (QMNeg). The results showed that the psychopathological symptoms of the participants are associated with neglect as reported by professionals, and with abuse, when self and hetero-reported. Specifically, interpersonal sensitivity, depression and paranoid ideation were the symptoms most associated with maternal neglect and hostility and paranoid ideation to maternal abusive practices. The reported findings have implications for future research and for the prevention and intervention in situations of child maltreatment.
