Um indesejável além-mar: Pinto Quartim e o movimento libertário nos dois lados do Atlântico (1887-1930)

Abstract

O objetivo principal desta tese é compreender o movimento e a composição das "ondas libertárias" que circularam pelo Atlântico no alvorecer do século XX, tendo como fio condutor a trajetória do jornalista António Thomas Pinto Quartim (1887-1970). Pinto Quartim colaborou e dirigiu importantes veículos de propaganda e de doutrinação anarquista nos dois lados do Atlântico. O seu percurso individual constitui um contributo importante para compreender as transformações ocorridas no interior do movimento anarquista brasileiro e português e as ressonâncias no carácter revolucionário que o sindicalismo assumiu nos dois países. O recorte temporal privilegia o período que compreende o nascimento do jornalista até os finais da década de 1920, momento em que sindicalismo revolucionário atingiu a sua maturidade e hegemonia entre os trabalhadores portugueses. Cobrindo assim, a sua origem no Rio de Janeiro aos primeiros contatos com o anarquismo em Coimbra, a sua expulsão para o Brasil ao regresso a Portugal. Apesar das referências ao militante, pelos estudos que abordam o anarquismo e o movimento operário, a trajetória de Pinto Quartim ainda permanece desconhecida, principalmente o período de exílio no Rio de Janeiro. Portanto, pretende-se resgatar parte da história de uma das principais figuras do movimento libertário internacional, revelando que o "fazer-se" anarquista do primeiro editor chefe de "A Batalha", porta voz da organização operária portuguesa, não pode ser compreendido sem levar em consideração o processo de "ambientalização" que as suas ideias experimentaram na América do Sul, ambientes marcados pela presença de "indesejáveis" que cruzavam o Atlântico, expulsos de toda parte.

The main objective of this thesis is to understand the movement and composition of the "libertarian waves" that circulated in the Atlantic at the dawn of the 20th century, having the trajectory of the journalist António Thomas Pinto Quartim as the guiding thread. Pinto Quartim collaborated and directed important vehicles of propaganda and anarchist indoctrination on both sides of the Atlantic. His individual journey is an important contribution to understanding the transformations that took place within the Brazilian and Portuguese anarchist movement, and Portuguese anarchist movement and the resonances in the revolutionary character that unionism assumed in both countries. The time frame favors the period that includes the birth of the journalist until the end of the 1920s, a time when revolutionary unionism reached its maturity and hegemony amongst Portuguese workers. Covering thus, his origin in Rio de Janeiro at the first contacts with anarchism in Coimbra, his expulsion to Brazil on his return to Portugal. Despite the references to the militant, due to the studies that deal with anarchism and the workers' movement, Pinto Quartim's trajectory remains unknown, especially the period of exile in Rio de Janeiro. Therefore, it is intended to rescue part of the history of one of the main figure of the international libertarian movement, revealing that the "making oneself" an anarchist of the first chief editor of "A Batalha", spokesman for the Portuguese workers' organization, it cannot be understood without taking into account the process of "environmentalization" that his ideas experienced in South America, environments marked by the presence of "undesirables" that crossed the Atlantic, expelled from everywhere.
