Seniores 2.0: inclusão digital na sociedade em rede

Abstract

A ampla disseminação de Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC) em rede nas últimas décadas trouxe às sociedades contemporâneas novas oportunidades e desafios. A sociedade em rede surge associada a um conjunto de competências e predisposições tendencialmente menos presentes entre as gerações mais velhas, especialmente entre os menos qualificados. Não obstante, a adesão dos seniores às novas TIC, nomeadamente à internet, tem sido crescente. Através de um modelo analítico multidimensional e de uma abordagem mixed methods, a pesquisa foca a relação da população sénior com as novas TIC em Portugal, caracterizando a situação atual e as dinâmicas evolutivas na esfera das políticas, das instituições e dos indivíduos. Para o efeito, desenvolve-se o mapeamento e a análise da intervenção em matéria de inclusão digital direcionada para esta população por atores políticos e instituições, incluindo a promoção de literacia digital e desenvolvimento de produtos TIC. Partindo de processos macrossociais, a tese centra-se depois num nível mais individual. Analisa-se a utilização e adoção das TIC pela população sénior, articulando tendências e padrões com subjetividades, singularidades e experiências individuais. Os principais resultados remetem para uma tipologia de modos de relação com as novas TIC entre os cibernautas seniores, que refletem diferentes trajetórias, práticas/usos, competências, significados e impactos. Com base numa perspetiva biográfica, identificam-se também diferentes tipos de trajetos de contacto com as novas TIC e explicitam-se modalidades de uso e impactos nas diferentes dimensões da vida dos seniores. Reúnem-se ainda elementos favorecedores da relação dos seniores com as TIC e discutem-se perspetivas de futuro quanto ao papel da tecnologia numa fase tardia da vida.

The wide dissemination of networked Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in recent decades has created new opportunities and challenges for contemporary societies. The network society requires a set of skills and predispositions less likely to be found among the older generations, especially the less qualified. However, the adherence of older adults to the new ICTs, particularly the internet, has been increasing. Through a multidimensional analytical model and a mixed method approach, the research focuses on the relationship between the older population and the new ICTs in Portugal, characterizing the current situation and the dynamics of evolution in the scope of policies, institutions and individuals. To this end, we developed a mapping and an analysis of the intervention on this target population, in terms of digital inclusion, by political actors and institutions, including the promotion of digital literacy and the development of ICT products. Starting from macrosocial processes, the thesis then focuses on a more individual level. The use and adoption of ICT by the older population is analysed through the articulation of trends and patterns with subjectivities, singularities and individual experiences. The main results of the research refer to a typology of modes of relating to the new ICTs among older internet users. This typology reflects different trajectories, practices/uses, skills, meanings and impacts. Based on a biographical perspective, the thesis also identifies different types of contact paths with the new ICTs, ways of use and impacts in the older adults’ life. Elements that favor the use of ICT by the elderly are remarked and future perspectives on the role of technology in later life are discussed.
