Sou um bom português sendo um bom americano: o Portuguese Times e a construção identitária da comunidade lusoamericana na Nova Inglaterra

Abstract

O objetivo desta dissertação é fazer um estudo exploratório com base na análise das publicações de 2018 do jornal Portuguese Times, desvendando a forma como a comunidade luso-americana em Nova Inglaterra tem perpetuado as suas tradições ao longo das várias décadas de permanência nos EUA, identificando algumas das principais dimensões e indicadores que explicam esse fenómeno. As comunidade luso-americana detêm um passado histórico bem estabelecido divido pelos diversos estados da região com especial densidade demográfica, e consequente expressão identitária nos estados de Massachusetts e Rhode Island. É precisamente com base nesta herança histórica e cultural associada a um determinado espaço geográfico e uma comunidade que são construídas identidades de grupo que se perpetuam ao longo do tempo e se exprimem na sociedade civil. Com base numa análise discursiva crítica do referido jornal, foram encontradas uma série de categorias que se inserem dentro daquilo que são as práticas sociais construtoras da identidade de uma comunidade. São esses indicadores que contribuem para a construção da identidade cultural Portuguese-American ou luso-americana e a exprimem – perante o pais que escolheram emigrar, perante o país do qual são originários e, consequentemente, perante o mundo.

The aim of this dissertation is to carry out an exploratory study based on the analysis of the 2018 publications of the Portuguese Times newspaper, revealing the way in which the Luso-American community in New England has perpetuated its traditions over several decades of stay in the United States of America, and consequently preserves and perpetuates the cultural elements of the country of origin, and what are the main dimensions and indicators that explain this phenomenon. The Luso-American community has a well-established historical past divided between the various states of the region with a special demographic density, and consequent expression of identity in the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. It is precisely on the basis of this historical and cultural heritage associated with a given geographical space and community of people, that group identities are constructed and perpetuated over time being expressed in civil society. Based on the type of research undertaken, the critical discursive analysis, a series of categories were found that constitute the main social practices responsable for constructing the community identity . These indicators constitute the basis of how this community built its Portuguese-American or Luso-American identity and expresses it – regarding to the region of the country where they decided to live in, to the country where they originated and ,consequently, to the world.
