Que mudanças?: Cuba e sua relação com os EUA

Abstract

O restabelecimento das relações diplomáticas entre Cuba e os EUA foi um dos mais importantes acontecimentos dos últimos anos no continente americano. Ao fim de mais de 50 anos de hostilidade assistimos à mais ambiciosa tentativa de normalizar as relações dos dois países. Depois de dois anos de avanços com uns EUA liderados por Barack Obama, a chegada de Donald Trump à presidência marca um regresso de uma política externa assente no confronto e hostilidade. Simultaneamente aos avanços e recuos na relação dos dois países, Cuba empreende o maior processo de transformação, económico e social, vivido na ilha desde o triunfo da sua revolução, em 1959, nomeadamente no que à propriedade e organização do emprego diz respeito, tal como ao papel do Estado na sociedade. Esta investigação propõe-se sistematizar, quer as mudanças na relação dos dois países, quer as transformações que têm ocorrido em Cuba nos últimos anos. Deste modo pretende-se compreender se houve uma mudança estrutural da relação dos EUA com Cuba e perceber de que modo ela pode influir, ou não, nas transformações que a maior ilha das Antilhas tem vivido nos últimos anos.

The reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States was one of the most important events of the last few years in the American continent. After more than 50 years of hostility the world witnessed the most ambitious attempt to normalize the relations between the two countries. After two years of positive progress with a US led by Barack Obama, the arrival of Donald Trump to the presidency marks a return of a foreign policy based on confrontation and hostility. At the same time as advances and setbacks occur between the two countries’ relationship, Cuba undertook the greatest process of economic and social transformation on the island since the triumph of its revolution in 1959, mainly regarding property the organization of employment and the role of the State in society. This research aims to systematize both the changes in the relationship of the two countries and the transformations occurred in Cuba in recent years. Hence it is intended to understand if there have been structural changes in the relations between the USA and Cuba and to perceive whether it can influence or not the transformations that the largest island of the Antilles has lived in the last few years or not.
