Crenças sobre o papel do pai: um olhar sobre diferentes gerações de homens

Abstract

Diversas mudanças nas esferas sociais, culturais, económicas e políticas têm conduzido a progressivas mudanças na perceção acerca do papel do pai, nomeadamente, nos cuidados à criança. O presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar numa amostra de 205 pais (com idades compreendidas entre os 23 e os 82 anos) de diferentes gerações, as crenças que estes têm sobre o seu papel parental, controlando diversas variáveis sociodemográficas. Os instrumentos utilizados foram o questionário sociodemográfico e o questionário “O Papel do Pai”. Os resultados indicam que não existem diferenças significativas entre os grupos de pais, em função da sua idade, relativamente às suas crenças paternas. Existem associações positivas e significativas entre a idade do pai e o número de filhos e entre a idade do pai e a idade em que este foi pai pela primeira vez. Existe, ainda, uma associação positiva e significativa em relação à idade que foi pai pela primeira vez e as habilitações literárias. Os resultados apontam para um pai com crenças modernas, independentemente da sua idade.

Several changes in the social, cultural, economic and political spheres have led to progressive changes in the perception of the father´s role, namely, on child care. The present study aimed to analyze parents’ beliefs about their roles as a father in a sample of 205 fathers (with ages between 23 and 82 years) being part of different generations, controlling various sociodemographic variables. Fathers completed two questionnaires: The sociodemographic questionnaire and The Role of the Father Questionnaires. Results show that there aren´t significant differences between the 3 groups of fathers (organized based on their age), about their paternal beliefs. There are positive and significant associations between the father´s age and the number of children, and between the father´s age and their age when they first became parents. It was also found a significant and positive association between the father´s age when they first became parents and their academic qualifications. The results show a father with modern beliefs about his role, regardless of his age.
