A presença da sociologia no ensino superior português, em cursos de outras áreas científicas

Abstract

A presente investigação pretende dar um contributo para a atualização do conhecimento sobre a presença da Sociologia no ensino superior português - não enquanto área científica principal, mas sim a sua mobilização por cursos de outras áreas de formação. A questão de partida é: como é que se carateriza a presença da sociologia nos cursos de outras áreas científicas, no ensino superior, em Portugal? Para responder a esta questão, o trabalho dividiu-se em três partes. Iniciou-se com o levantamento das licenciaturas e mestrados integrados que lecionam uma disciplina de sociologia no ensino superior português, excluindo os próprios cursos de sociologia, permitindo perceber qual a sua verdadeira dimensão, quais as áreas mais e menos recetivas à integração da sociologia na formação dos seus alunos e também que diferenças existem entre os vários subsistemas de ensino. A investigação prosseguiu com entrevistas a responsáveis (coordenadores e docentes) em diferentes cursos e instituições de forma a perceber como é que a disciplina se enquadra no âmbito geral do curso e qual a sua utilidade. Por fim, procurou-se compreender até que ponto os alunos lhe atribuem interesse, nomeadamente para o seu percurso formativo e profissional. Esta informação foi obtida através da aplicação de um questionário. Conclui-se que a presença da Sociologia no ensino superior é relativamente extensa, e que o seu ensino nestes contextos, apesar de ser valorizado, enfrenta vários obstáculos, nomeadamente a compreensão da sua utilidade por parte dos alunos.

The present research aims to contribute to the updating of the knowledge about the presence of Sociology in Portuguese higher education - not as the main scientific area, but rather its mobilization by courses in other areas of training and education. The starter question is how is the presence of sociology characterized in the courses of other scientific areas, in higher education, in Portugal? To answer this question, the research was divided into three parts. First, the listing of the Portuguese higher education undergraduate programs that provide one or more curricular units in the area of Sociology, excluding the Sociology courses themselves, making it possible to perceive their true dimension, which areas are more or less receptive to the integration of Sociology in the training of their students, and also what differences exist between the various subsystems of education. Secondly, in order to understand how the discipline stands within the general scope of the undergraduate program and what its usefulness is - both planned, and perceived -, pairs of coordinators / sociology teachers’ were interviewed. Finally, an online survey was applied to students taking these undergraduate programs, seeking to understand to what extent they think of sociology as useful, both in their training as well as in their future. It is concluded that the presence of Sociology in higher education is relatively extensive, and that its teaching in these contexts, despite being valued, faces several obstacles, namely the understanding of its usefulness by students.
