Inventário Home observation for measurement of the environment (HOME) para crianças dos zero aos cinco anos de famílias culturalmente diversas: uma análise crítica

Abstract

A família e o ambiente familiar são muito importantes para o desenvolvimento da criança. O inventário HOME - Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) de Bradley e Caldwell (1984; citado por Bradley e Caldwell, 2003; adaptado para Português Europeu por Abreu-Lima & Cruz, 2003), tendo como objetivo principal a avaliação da estimulação presente no ambiente familiar, é um dos instrumentos que tem merecido maior atenção neste âmbito. O presente trabalho analisa de forma crítica este instrumento, sugerindo a possibilidade de criação de uma versão do inventário para crianças dos 0 aos 5 anos procurando recriar o contínuo desenvolvimentista da primeira infância. Para além deste objetivo, procura-se que esta versão possa minimizar o enviesamento cultural que tem sido identificado neste instrumento, e neste sentido se possa adequar a famílias culturalmente diversas. Para responder a estes objetivos foram conduzidos grupos focais com experts em dinâmicas familiares e na área da cidadania e igualdade de género (N = 9), de forma a recolher várias perspetivas sobre a administração do inventário HOME a essas famílias. O segundo estudo consistiu na aplicação piloto do inventário HOME revisto (0-5 anos) a famílias de origem Portuguesa, de origem Africana e de etnia Cigana (N=15). Em termos gerais, sugere-se uma versão do inventário que recrie o contínuo desenvolvimentista, substituindo a palavra progenitor (pai/mãe) pelo termo “cuidador/a”, uma maior flexibilidade na definição de alguns itens sobretudo da subescala Variedade, e a possibilidade de introduzir a opção “não aplicável” à escala de cotação binária da versão original.

The family and the family environment are very important for child development. The HOME inventory - Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) by Bradley and Caldwell (1984; cit. in Bradley e Caldwell, 2003¸ adapted to European Portuguese by Abreu-Lima & Cruz, 2003), with the main objective of performing a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the stimulation in the home environment, is one of the instruments that has received greater attention in this domain. This thesis describes a critical analysis of the inventory, suggesting the possibility of creating a single version of the inventory for children aged 0 to 5 years, which would recreate the early childhood development continuum. In addition, this version also intendes to minimize the cultural bias previously identified in this instrument, so it can be adequate for culturally diverse families. To address these goals, focus groups were conducted with experts in family dynamics and in the area of citizenship and gender equality (N = 9) in order to collect multiple perspectives on the application of the HOME inventory. The second study consisted in the pilot application of the revised HOME (N=15) to Portuguese, African, and Roma families. In summary, we suggest a single version of the inventory that recreates the early childhood development continuum, substituting the word “parent” (father/mother) by the term caregiver, a greater flexibility in the definition of some items particularly in the subscale Variety, and the possibility of introducing the option “not applicable” to the binary response scale of the original instrument.
