| dc.description.abstract | This study investigates how Portuguese social media travel influencers shape parasocial relationships (PSRs), which in turn influence Generation Z’s travel intentions. Drawing on the Travel Influencer Construct framework (Manthiou et al., 2024), five influencer characteristics—authenticity, inspiration, attractiveness, expertise, and trustworthiness—were analyzed in relation to PSRs and intention to visit, across micro, macro, and mega influencers. A mixed-methods design combined three focus groups with 17 participants and a survey with 203 valid responses from Portuguese Generation Z (18–28 years old). Findings show that inspiration and trustworthiness are the strongest predictors of PSRs and also directly increase intention to visit. Attractiveness influenced intention to visit but did not strengthen relationships, while authenticity and expertise did not significantly predict PSRs or intention. When comparing influencer categories, macro-influencers consistently outperformed both micro and mega-influencers in shaping PSRs and intention to visit, emerging as a “sweet spot” between relatability and reach. Mega-influencers, despite their aspirational appeal, were perceived as less authentic, trustworthy, and relatable, which weakened their overall influence. This study contributes to tourism and influencer marketing literature by clarifying how Portuguese Gen Z’s perceptions of influencer traits shape parasocial relationships and travel intentions in an underexplored cultural context. It challenges assumptions about authenticity, expertise, and follower count, highlighting instead the central role of inspiration, trust, and the strategic effectiveness of macro-influencers. For destination marketing organizations and brands, the findings emphasize the value of partnering with influencers who balance reach with relatability, foster trust, and inspire meaningful connections with Generation Z travelers. | |
