Imagens sociais de jovens em acolhimento residencial: Um estudo com estudantes universitários

Abstract

A literatura sugere que as imagens sociais associadas a crianças e jovens em acolhimento residencial são predominantemente negativas, resultando em processos de estigmatização com um impacto prejudicial no seu bem-estar. Variáveis sociocognitivas como a orientação para a dominância social e a empatia, ou diferenças individuais de género, têm sido associadas a estas imagens sociais. Assim, o presente estudo, teve como objetivo testar o papel mediador destas variáveis sociocognitivas na relação entre o sexo e a imagens sociais de jovens acolhidos. Participaram neste estudo 161 estudantes universitários com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e os 55 anos (M = 23.06, SD = 5.22), maioritariamente do sexo feminino (78.3%), de nacionalidade portuguesa (97.5%) e sem contacto prévio ou atual com jovens em acolhimento residencial (64.6%). Os resultados obtidos revelaram efeitos indiretos estatisticamente significativos da empatia e da oposição à igualdade na relação entre o sexo dos participantes e a dimensão competentes das imagens sociais. As participantes do sexo feminino tendem a apresentar níveis mais elevados de preocupação empática e tomada de perspetiva e mais reduzidos de oposição à igualdade, o que por sua vez, está associado a níveis mais elevados de imagens sociais relacionadas com a competência dos jovens acolhidos. A presente dissertação permitiu aprofundar a compreensão acerca das diferenças individuais ao nível das imagens sociais de jovens em acolhimento residencial assim como do papel das variáveis sociocognitivas. Serão discutidas implicações para mitigar os mecanismos que perpetuam desigualdades face a grupos em situação de particular vulnerabilidade, como os jovens em acolhimento.

The literature suggests that the social images associated with children and young people in residential care are predominantly negative, resulting in stigmatization processes with a detrimental impact on their well-being. Sociocognitive variables such as social dominance orientation and empathy, or individual gender differences, have been associated with these social images. Thus, the present study aimed to test the mediating role of these sociocognitive variables in the relationship between gender and the social images of young people in residential care. This study included 161 university students, aged between 18 and 55 years (M = 23.06, SD = 5.22), mostly female (78.3%), portuguese (97.5%) and with no prior or current contact with young people in residential care (64.6%). The results revealed statistically significant indirect effects of empathy and opposition to equality in the relationship between the gender of the participants and the competent dimension of social images. Female participants tend to exhibit higher levels of empathic concern and perspective-taking and lower levels of opposition to equality, which in turn is associated with higher levels of social images related to the competence of the young people in care. This dissertation helped to deepen the understanding of individual differences in the social images of young people in residential care, as well as the role of sociocognitive variables. Implications for mitigating the mechanisms that perpetuate inequalities towards groups in situations of vulnerability, such as young people in care, will be discussed.
