The paradigm shift in marketing towards well-being has brought attention to subjective well-being (SWB); thus, understanding factors that influence SWB is crucial for marketers. That is why this study aims to explore the relationship between Consumer Independence (CI), Consumer Need for Uniqueness (CNFU), Self-Concept Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), and SWB. It delves deeper into comparing these effects between utilitarian and hedonic purchases consumption in commerce, offering insights into how product category affects the results. The study uses a quantitative methodology employing two separate questionnaires, each with 231 US participants. A pre-test was conducted to ensure the proper selection of utilitarian and hedonic goods for the main study. The direct and mediated associations between CI, CNFU, FoMO, and SWB across both product categories were investigated using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results challenge the traditional negative nuance of FoMO, as both personal and social FoMO positively influence SWB. Moreover, only Social FoMO mediates the relationship between consumer traits and SWB. CI negatively affects SWB when partially mediated by FoMO, while CNFU positively affects SWB when fully mediated by FoMO. Besides the stronger negative effect of CI on Personal and Social FoMO in the utilitarian context, the other relationships are significantly similar across the utilitarian and hedonic groups. This study provides insights into leveraging FoMO in marketing to improve consumer well-being. Additionally, it provides future research opportunities, including exploring the circumstances under which FoMO acts as a positive predictor of well-being.por
Os resultados desafiam a nuance negativa tradicional do FoMO, pois tanto o FoMO pessoal quanto o social influenciam positivamente o BES.
