Capelas e terras de ónus de missa na ilha do Fogo, Cabo Verde (séculos XVI-XVIII)

Abstract

Until today, only a few advances were made in the rural history of the archipelago of Cabo Verde, particularly concerning its property history. This is due, among other factors, to an urban focus of the sources that almost silence the rural world. On the other hand, as the archipelago started to lose its centrality in the Atlantic world from the first decades of the 17th century on, especially the islands of Santiago and Fogo, documents became rarer and poorer, namely regarding the island of Fogo. Thus, the codex of chapels and other entailed property with pious obligations in the island of Fogo becomes particularly important for listing all the properties of this kind from the 16th to the 19th century. This study intends to examine this documental corpus in the light of property history, social history and history of mentalities, looking both into social strategies and beliefs involved in this kind of entailed property. Dictates demanded from the chapel heirs and family strategies are also subject to analysis, whenever the content of the codex allows it.

A história rural do arquipélago de Cabo Verde, e a da propriedade em particular, apenas conheceram até agora tímidos avanços. Tal deve-se, entre outros factores, a um olhar urbano centrado das fontes, que quase deixam em silêncio o mundo rural. Por outro lado, à medida que, a partir das primeiras décadas do século XVII, o arquipélago, especialmente as ilhas de Santiago e do Fogo, perdeu a sua centralidade oceânica, a documentação tornou-se mais rara e pobre. Reveste assim particular importância o códice das capelas e terras de ónus de missa da ilha do Fogo que inventaria todas as propriedades deste tipo existentes nesta ilha entre os séculos XVI e XIX. Este estudo pretende analisar aquele corpus documental à luz da história da propriedade, da história social e das mentalidades, divisando quer o tipo de estratégias sociais, quer as crenças que a vinculação de uma capela implicava. São também objecto de análise, quando a fonte o permitiu, os ditames exigidos aos herdeiros e as estratégias familiares que lhes subjazem.
