| dc.description.abstract | Professional athletes represent a unique investor class whose careers are short and earnings highly con-centrated. While income during active years can be substantial, the abrupt decline after retirement cre-ates long-term financial vulnerabilities that traditional investments alone may not address. This thesis proposes a private equity fund designed exclusively for professional athletes, active and retired, structured to combine diversification and capital preservation. The model integrates private eq-uity buyouts with real estate, offering both growth potential and stability. Anchored in the Portuguese regulatory framework, the thesis presents a comprehensive business plan that encompasses legal struc-tures, governance, investment criteria, and fundraising strategies. The analysis proceeds in three steps: (i) a literature review highlighting athletes’ financial chal-lenges and the relevance of private equity in high-net-worth portfolios; (ii) a market review situating the fund within global, European, and Portuguese private equity trends; and (iii) a comparative study of athlete-backed funds, which shows that existing initiatives focus narrowly on venture and growth equity. The findings demonstrate that a hybrid structure oriented toward long-term resilience better aligns with the financial lifecycle of athletes. The findings suggest that a hybrid structure combining private equity and real estate can better align with athletes’ financial needs, expanding the scope of athlete-backed funds within the Portuguese context. | |
