| dc.description.abstract | The Illusion of Falseness suggests that statements that contradict familiar ideas are judged as more false than new statements, regardless of their factual truth. This bias may be associated with factors such as processing fluency and memory processes. Statements processing tends to be more fluent in a native language (L1) than in a second language (L2). In an experimental study, we investigated the impact of processing fluency disruption on the Illusion of Falseness effect by manipulating language switching from the exposure to the re-exposure phase. The 130 participants were native Portuguese speakers (L1) with high proficiency in English (L2) and were divided into two experimental conditions: L1-L2 and L2-L1. In the exposure phase, participants were randomly presented with 30 ambiguous statements. In the re-exposure phase, they were presented with 30 contradictions of the original statements and 30 new statements. Participants made truth judgments for all statements presented. We replicated the Illusion of Falseness, extending it to a bilingual context, demonstrating its robustness and generalization. We observed that the effect was not determined by the switching condition or L2 proficiency. However, its magnitude was greater in the L1-L2 condition. These results contribute to understanding the processes underlying truth judgments, particularly those involved in evaluating contradictions presented in a second language. | |
